Hi Guys, Pulling my hair out

I have a database in excel, with deeplink to the products. In my index pages it shows as a full URL (ie http://www.theshop/products/product?=priductid=876)

if i put Buy Now# b4 and ##Buy Now after the link in excel it shows as Buy Now - Which is what i want.

Is there an easy way to add this to the links in excel i have over 4000 products, i can use find and replace for the first bit, but as most of the URLs end in something different i can only add on the ##Buy Now bit by copying and pasting, and I'm guessing thats going to take 3.84 Years!!!! - Please help and thanks in advance.

    Rob

I am not sure what you mean. Do you mean you have the URL in two parts? You want to add something to the end of the URL?

    Try something like this.

    href=" [ WM-Field: URL-Part-1 raw nolink ][ WM-Field: URL-Part-2 raw nolink ] ">

You will have to remove the extra spaces.

I'll try and make it a bit clearer.

When WM does it's stuff, the detail pages include a deep link to the product. At the moment it appears as http://www etc. I've read the help and it say to add TEXT # at the beginning of the URL in the database and ##TEXT at the end 'text' an be anything. Then in the detail pages the deep link appears as 'TEXT' which clicks through to the product.

So what I have to do on all product URL's is add TEXT# to the beginning and ##TEXT to the end

    ie http://www.shop.com/productid=45 becomes
    TEXT#http://www.shop.com/productid=45##TEXT

It's 4.30 am here in the UK and im probably to tired for this right now.

    Thanks again

If you are just doing it in Excel, then in a single blank cell, type in ##BuyNow (for example in cell M1) and Buy Now# in cell M2). Assume your url column is K. Add a blank column next to your URL column (L). In the blank cell next to the first url (L2), type in
    =concatenate($M$2,K2,$M$1)

Copy this down to the bottom of your file. You should see the correct url in these cells in column L. Copy the column, then paste special only the values into the original url column. Last, delete the formula column and the contents of the cell with the Buy Now# and ##BuyNow.

Your orignal url field should now have the Buy Now# and ##Buy Now appended.

Wyvern's response is quite correct. Read it three times and then do it.

However, if you find that too confusing, there is a slightly longer and perhaps easier to understand method.

First, let's assume that your "URL-Field" is in column A, beginning in cell A2
In column B (cell B2) type in "Buy Now##"
In column C (cell C2) type in "##BuyNow"
Copy the contents of B & C down to the bottom of the datafeed

In columum D (cell D2) type in =(B2&""&A2&""&C2) This formula puts together (concatenates) the contents of cells B2, A2, and C2. Copy this formua down to the bottom of the datafeed.
The contents of Column D should look like "BuyNow#URL##BuyNow"

If you want to make the result be "BuyNow##-URL-##BuyNow" you would simply adjust the formula in D2 to become =(B2&"-"&A2&"-"&C2). Anything added between the "" is inserted into every cell.

Finally, if you are exporting your data as a tab delimited file to import into WebMerge, then it is not necessary to "Copy the column, then paste special only the values into the original url column." (Although it is a good precaution) You could, however, simply rename the header for column D "URL-Field" and rename the header for column A "URL-Field-old".

Why do all that when you can use a <a href > like you normally would?

    loxly,

...in the feed it may be that the item name is 'BLUE WIDGET' in the feed and it is easy enough to get a <a href with 'BLUE WIDGET' as the anchor text. However by using the "concatenate" function in MS Excel you can turn the link text into 'BUY BLUE WIDGETS HERE' right in the datafeed by creating a custom field which adds the text you desire to incorporate right to the item name. It's just like programming...there's more than one way to do it. I use "concatenate" extensively when I manipulate datafeeds.

    <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> I use "concatenate" extensively when I manipulate datafeeds.
    <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

I do also, it just seemed like a lot of extra work for a "Buy Now" link, custom text for each page was not mentioned.

You can just make a plain image with the words "Buy Now" and link it in your webmerge code.
