Ok, here is my problem. When you choose "auto create" for the index page, it generates a page listing of all the detail pages.

Now I have created a template I would like to use. What I want it to do is make the same long list as it does in "auto create" and start a new index page with each new category, the feed is already sorted by category.

My template only list the last record of each category, I have to assume it just keeps overwriting the previous record.

How do I get webmerge to produce the long list of records in a custom template? I am getting very frusterated! Any help would be appreciated...

WebMerge processes records in order, so you'll want to sort on the field you're using for your categories. WebMerge can do that for you: see the Sort option in the Sources tab.

If it's not a sorting issue is may be that your index template doesn't contain a WM-Record tag to tell the program which portion of the page should be replicated for each record.

From the Help section on "Preparing Your Templates":
    ---------------------------------------------------

quote:

For index pages, WebMerge will replicate a portion of your template for each record in your source file. You specify the record portion of your index template using the WM-Record tag.

Any HTML between the [WM-Record] and [/WM-Record] tags will be replicated once for each record. The data within the WM-Record tags can contain other tags, such as WM-Field, so you can pretty much make any layout you want.

Here's an example of how it works. If your template contains this:

    [WM-Record]

[WM-Field: Name]

[WM-Field: City]

[WM-Field: State]

    [/WM-Record]

...then the HTML WebMerge generates will look something like this:

Richard Gaskin

Los Angeles

CA

Joe Schmoe

Faketown

PA

Jane Doe

Anytown

MO

If your index template contains WebMerge tags before the [WM-Record] tag or after the [/WM-Record] tag, WebMerge will still process those tags, using the data from the first record of your source file. If you're making multiple index pages, tags outside of the WM-Record tags are processed using the first record in the range for that page.

Have you already tried this setting in the Index tab:

Make new Index page when --> value in this Field changes --> <your-category-field>

Somehow that seems a little too easy so maybe I don't fully understand the problem.
