Just playing around with WebMerge and I have a feed with extremely long and boring descriptions. Basically, I only want to show the first 200 or so characters of the description field and leave out the rest. Is there a way to do this ?

There is if your using Excel:

Create another column and insert this:

=IF(LEN(A2)<200,A2,(LEFT(A2,200)))

A2 = Description field
200 = Number of Characters in the field you want to use.

This cleans it up pretty good, just add "..." and maybe a link that says "more information" to the end and your all set.

Maybe we can twist Richard arm to add us a Webmerge tag that will do the same thing

Thanks, Nature Boy, works a treat. A WebMerge tag would be good, though.

I agree.

Maybe what we need is another option for the WM-Field tag. We could limit it to a specified number of characters, words, or lines -- any other limits we might consider?

All three of those options would be useful, in my opinion. Plus if there's html already in the datafeed, you could limit it to the closing </p> tag or the second <br> tag or whatever html tag you choose.

This is useful to a lot of people. What should the syntax look like?

I'm considering an attribute like this:

[WM-Field: MyField: len="200" ellipsis]

The "ellipsis" would be optional, and would put "..." at the end of the text.

Would that work? Can you think of a simpler way to express that, or maybe I'm missing something and it needs more options?

What if the first 200 characters broke into a word? Wouldn't you want an option that stopped at the nearest space before 200 characters?

I'll settle for truncating characters as I already do this with Excel using the above example; however it would be handy to have WM do it natively...

But instead of "len" for length how about "tru" for truncate or "tri" for trim...or how about "cut" for cut
