While I don't really press the issue too much, still my sign up rate for mailing list/newsletters s u c k s. Using the bravenet which is a double opt in, get a password so you can come back in and confirm you want it. Far too much work as far as I am concerned. Can anyone suggest a good site offering (free) that I can use to get some better results for this???
    Thanks

Listpower really scares me. The are not very stable as far as I am concerned. They are also very moody and will cancel accounts on a whim.

You are much better off going through a paid service.

After all, you get what you pay for. So it would seem to follow that if you pay nothing you can expect to get nothing?

    (more often than bot anyway)

Okay, who is running the script that changed my homepage to allcommunity? If you don't already know it they are useless. It is not nice to change someones homepage without asking!

Coming soon...a complete list management system for a very low monthly price... complete, like listbot - without ads but with more goodies attached.

You can build your own list or newsletter in a blink. Stay tuned it's due out Wednesday.

Im not experienced with running mailing lists so please forgive my question.

Why use some service when you can simply run a script on your own?

Are there problems that I wouldn't be aware of and what are they?

I use MoJo for my mailing lists.
While I've never actually sent my newsletter out yet, it's been collecting addresses very well.
Lots of options.. ability to send to some or all, in either text or html email.

Only shortcomings I can see (unless I don't know how to use it properly) is that there is no option to collect the person's name (to make the mail look less like spam), and the ability for them to choose either htmk or text..
The option to run multiple lists on the one script is also pretty good.
So, if you can run scripts... use MoJo

Wow free sex?, but will it get me my cioffee in the morning too?

Thanks for responses. Wanted to look at mojo, but their site appeared down. May try listpower and see if it boosts newsletter requests up. If it doesn't I may put on back burner for a while. Java will work but only problem with my @home providers is they don't allow for such things cgi, perl etc and won't work, so basically I am having to go through these other places

The problems with doing it on your own relates to your list size, and your hosting arrangement. Sending out mass mailings can be a very server intensive process. If you are on a shared hosting account and you send out 2000 emails at once there is a good chance your going to crash the server for everyone else. Look at this way most people’s mailings (mine are anyway) about the same size as an average web page. It would be like someone flipping a switch and 2000 unique people trying to load your home page all at the same time. Another issues is that many hosts’ T.O.S. prohibit mailing lists at all, and others limit the size a list can be. My recommendation is if you anticipate that your list is going to exceed 1000 subscribers you need a list hosting service. I find that a lot of these services are more expensive than conventional web hosting.
