Pls note: I don't know s... about Java!

Is there a program / a way to edit existing Java *.class files (I'm sure there is)?

What I want to do is to change some text in one file (Yes, inside of the .class file). How can I do this? I tried with text editors (stupid me), changed the text and (of course) the file wasn't working anymore.

Can this be done with a Hex editor? Is there something I must be careful about (like there is something I Don't have to be careful about, right ?

To conclude - can I change some text in the .class file myself with no Java knowledge at all or do I have to bother the file author with my e-mails?

    Thx
