I am building pages with a lot of heavy graphics to show the merchandise. Is there a way to ensure that the text loads first so that they have something to read while the images load?

Be sure to use both height and width tags on every single graphic.

Should do it. The browser needs to know what screen space to reserve for the image. It can either find this out by waiting for the image to fully load (won't display text while the image is loading) or by reading the height/width elements of the img tag (will display text once the elements are read).

Another speed issue to be aware of is that an HTML table will not load until ALL the text contained in the table is loaded. So if you have tons of text, it's better to break up the page into a series of small tables (sometimes this is not possible designwise).
