    I need to redirect index.html to index.shtml and I do not know the syntax.

    Put this in the head of your .html document

    <META HTTP-EQUIV="refresh" content="0;URL=http://www.???.shtml">

    replace the ??? with your web address

    Put this line in your .htaccess


    fileDirectoryIndex index.shtml index.html


    Your server will make index.shtml the default and in any directories where it doesn't find a index.shtml it will serve the index.html

    I would strongly suggest you do both - Then you catch new viewers directly with your .shtml but you don't strand people who find your page via a hard link to the .html file.
