HTML compression programs can shrink your page size and make them load fast, but according to the trial version of HtmlCompact:

If you compress the BODY section:
"search engine spiders cannot index the page properly"

If you compress the entire page:
"spiders will not read all meta tags between <HEAD> and </HEAD>

Is there a program that can compress HTML files without affecting search engines?

Selma, the best way to make your html files smaller is one, use an image optimizer to decrease the kb size of any pictures, 2 use css (cascading style sheets) to set the font size etc... this will be a small document that you put in the head section but will affect the entire page. (lets you eliminate redundant html tags) hope that helps. you can find help on css here: http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/css/

hmmmm...never noticed any issues with my compacted pages getting indexed. The program I use states that compacting can make it easier for SEs to index the pages as there is less white space between words (just like removing the space between keywords in the META KEYWORDS tag).

I have to agree with Stanley .. we have several #1 keyword ranking pages that have been fully compacted using compact software and have had no problem with the SE's correctly digesting the content and rating accordingly.

Arachnophilia does a real good job of compacting (and decompacting) html files, and it's free..

Of course, being Java, it's slow to load..
