Just looking for opinions and this seems like the best place to post it. If not, let me know.

I have a site that has been up for awhile. Some of it has already been indexed but not all. Are there any concerns about duplicate content penalties or anything if I apply mod rewrite to it now to remove variables from my urls?

This may be a dumb question but, believe me, I am qualified to ask one of those

That's a good question since both versions of the page are visible.

You should probably do a 301 redirect.

You can do a 301 right in the htaccess like:
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule ^page1\.html$ page2.html [R=301,L]

The "R=301" tells the server to return a 301 status code with the page. The "L" is optional but it tells the server that this is the last rule.

When your finished you can check the results by using a "HTTP Header Viewer" tool. Just search for one on Google.

    Thanks MrSpeed.

I was thinking of something similar anyway I just wanted to confirm my concerns. Thanks again!

I owe ya one for the tip. My approach was gonna be a little more complicated! Dolt!
