Can anyone explain why I can do all sorts of URL rewrites, user-agent blocks, custom error pages, referrer redirects, etc. but a simple Order Allow,Deny (by IP) refuses to work? It can only be written so many ways, but no matter what I do it will not block an ip address.

I've resorted to a php script for now, putting the IPs in an array and blocking, but I really don't prefer doing it that way.

this code worked for my in .htaccess file:

    Order Allow,Deny
    Allow from All
    Deny from my_ip_here

Maybe Order command is not allowed for your domain ?

Yeah, that's what I'm currently using. I've even tried switching the, order, out: Order Deny, Allow. And listing the denied ips first, allow all last.

I figured there was some kind of module or something that wasn't allowing me to use it, but with my host allowing me to do everything else under the sun with my htaccess, I thought that would be one of the last things I wouldn't be allowed to do.

If you are running this manually, back up the file and try applying this in your CPanel or domain Admin area. Sometimes, things just won't work if it is not server initiated. This may not work but it's worth a try.

    maybe mod_alias is not installed?

you can check if it is by envoking this server side command:
    /home/httpd/bin/httpd -l

    Change to your path.
