Hi guys First time post, long time reader here.
I recently made the leap into buying a domain name with the aim of turning it into a commercial project over the course of the next year or so.
Ive had hobby based websites in the past and still run one for my old gaming clan. I have experience with HTML, php and so on, but i wouldnt say im very literate in any of them. Im a master cut & paste type guy lol.
This new site is going to be a gift based site, which i know has been done to death, but im hoping it will turn over a small income that will cover hosting costs and allow me to fund other domain registrations and so on. My initial objectives are very modest.
I want to set the site up in categories as standard and also have a tool that allows visitors to narrow down potential gifts.
I could make a site like that in Dreamweaver, but im wondering if there easier options. Ive looked at SiteBuildIt, and it has all the tools i need but all the client sites look like cookie cutter sites, the templates are ordinary.
Plus im told its not overly flexible so it basically leads me back to a DYI approach. Are there any other software packages that specialise in allowing affiliates to set up products in categories, complete with affiliate links etc, but have better templating, more flexibility?
Im subscribed to WebCEO atm for my old site, so in terms of keyword optimization etc, i can get that info from that.
SiteBuildIt looks cool but ive heard varying reports

I might get eggs thrown at me for this, but I loooove Joomla for building large sites quickly, if you don't want to do a lot with data feeds. (Of course, you can use data feeds in a Joomla site too.)
You can make your own template, or download any of 500+ free ones. You can also buy some nice ones for a pittance...

It's not totally clear from your post if you are trying to be a merchant site or affiliate site.
There's some "site builder" packages that also support affiliate tracking. I have some listed on my site - hard to keep track with over 30 listed now.
Another one to check is synthasite - still in beta but targeted to affiliates.
Hope this helps you somehow.
