    Hello team,

I am inviting Brian into this thread, he is the programmer who is working on tweaking the BFP data feed. He will be better able to handle the concerns and questions, direct and much faster so we can have the best mouse trap in the shortest amount of time.

Many of you have already implemented the feed, some are half way there and some are still strugling....

This is not the easiest feed to work with, but the upside is huge.....

Any questions, suggestions or linking characteristics relative to BFP and the feed can be posted here and we will monitor this thread.....

    Thank you....

    Good idea, this thread.

    1. How often is this feed updated?

    2. I'm seeing price discrepancies. Example: item I2010-44621. My site shows $79.77. BFP site shows $86.85 (Possibly because I haven't updated in a week?)

    3. Any chance of a BFP-Lite feed? As I mentioned in another thread, the feed is so large mainly as a result of lengthy URLs that can be created on the fly with my ASP code. A trimmed down feed could be a big space/time/bandwidth saver.

    Thanks.

    Wayne

Yes, absolutely...should be no price discrepancies. Youmay also be using the wrong part number - Brian?

Andy, the first link redirects to netster.com, or some such, and asks to change your homepage, and the second ask's to install gain.

    Zoiks ....
just opened her up and shes .... intense.
Because of delimiters in descriptions and what not, I end up with 13 or so Descriptions fields and 11 brand fields. these have every thing from brand to prices to image urls in them.
I also have a couple of "Brand Product Descriptions" these contain dollar amounts.
I'm thinking that can't be right.

Maybe a change in column delimiters would be something to consider.

    Just my 2c

OK I need to add this.
After downloading a new copy, I am seeing better results. I don't know if the file was interupted the first time and was corrupted but it seems to work a lot better now.
I do still have approx 9 description and brand fields though. Each of the rows with data there looks like there is a part of the actual description in each field.
    Does anyone else get this?

    Andy,

I still can't apply for BFP at BeFree. Have they switched off new applications, in preparation for the move to the CJ interface?

The feed is just to big for for anything I am using. Everything crashes with the 415 meg file. Break it up and I can sell the stuff...GSPLIT crashes on it too. I've kinda passed on this until its workable for me.

    Limey,

Get yourself a linux box or something. Microsoft Windows sounds like it want to load the entire thing into memory before working on it.

I d/l feeds using wget, strip the crap out using awk on the way down, and by the time they get to their alloted location on the hard disk, they're stripped down to the exact format I want.

Bonus: no more worrying about the horrendous number of windows-based data-damaging and privacy-killing worms and viruses out there!

My only request right now would be for categories, similar to what is at BFP after you drill down to make, model, year.

I am in W2K platform and use EditPadPro. I originally seperated makes into different files to make it more manageable, but I recently spent a couple days making a script to reduce the size of the feed from 415 mb (or whatever it is) to a "manageable" 87 mb and load it into the database. If you think about it, this kind of job really is for pros and you have to think like a pro to get this thing licked!

I don't develop-(meant design) in linux found it way to frustrating. I've been using linux since RH 5ish. I use it in the server environment though obviously.

-- Andy we need to conference with BF in the morning about the URL's. I don't see any reason to replace every non-standard charactor with the HTML charactor codes. The file I hand to BF is half the size that they are handing back to the affiliates.

I believe its due to the netscape browsers ( if anyone still uses them) but on a file this size, the solution may be causing more damage than good....I'll run it by Scott....

Firstly, with a feed this size, I like to see anything that can be constructed from other data being stripped out.

Like URLs that can be constructed with a BF ID and a SKU.

Like tracking URLs that are the same on every item.

Like thumbnail IMG URLs that can be constructed by adding /thumb to the IMG URL.

All that stuff can be documented, it doesn't have to be padding out the file.

Then, pulling everything together in this thread:

We need the general categories in the feed that the main site uses.

Those hard line breaks have to go - the only reliable way they can be fixed is at source as my only option is to miss out those records.

It would be great if those myriad description fields could be tidied up. I can't easily imagine the back end that is resulting in a single sentence of maybe 6 words being split over multiple fields, and it isn't difficult to concatenate them back together, but these are all unwelcome additional processes to be multiplied x thousand times.

I'd like a look at that.

I've also noticed a bunch of missing images.

What CrazyGuy said, despite it meaning I'd need to rewrite my script

I'd like to take a look at that download utility also.

If you dont have an image for a specific item can we have a default 'no image available' image link.
