Qwestdex stopped reporting sales a little over a week ago. They sent an email saying that their program is still active, and they were tracking affiliate hits--just keeping the info a secret.

So, what do you think the odds are that they still are tracking affiliate searches, and actually have the intention of ever coming back online and paying affiliates?

A much more reputable firm there stopped reporting commissionable sales in April and still hasn't complied with updatingg reports. So BeFree will clam up and ask you to deal with the merchant since they only provide the software and have nothing to do with whether or not the merchant uses it properly.

Maybe the image of Worldcom 2 execs today being hauled off in cop cars cuffed in their Armini suits might let you know the state of affairs at Telco/bandwidth companies. The popup hell hole called Dealtime still exists but they sure don't have any money to payout on commissions if your looking to give away free searches.

My guess is that the Qwest accountants weren't sure if a commission payment was a capital investment or an expense. They probably erred on the side that acheived the highest stock price. Now that they see people going to jail for cooking the books, they probably decided the safest bet would be to stop tracking affiliate sales altogether. After all, no one has ever gone to jail for defrauding affiliates.

Accounting wise, there are some subtle distinctions in the affiliate market. If the commission payments are part of an ongoing effort to build sales, they are an expense. If they are the lure in a bait and switch operation...they are a capital expense.

Unfortunately, the people sending accountants to jail may not understand the subtleties of the new economy.

Not yet! But the day will come thanks to great networking like we do here on ABW. Information between affiliates gets around pretty quick now a days.
