I've got an idea!!!!
How about setting up the program so that when an affiliate drops a merchant, the program automatically unsubscribes the affiliate from the merchant's affiliate email list.
My guess is that, in most cases when an affiliate drops a merchant, it is because the a fore mentioned affiliate really doesn't care too much for the merchant in question, and would rather not waste bandwidth on the merchants blather.
Since the merchant is not in the affiliates list of merchants after the affiliate drops the big one, it is harder to unsubscribe from the email list.

I believe this is already the case.
While merchants can send email from the Be Free system, it's possible for merchants to export their list of affiliates and mail them using a different tool. In this case, recent updates may not get captured.
