I need some help. I have read through many posts here on this subject, and have implemented some of the suggestions. But, I guess I don't really have enough of the marketing mentality to come up with some strategies.
My biggest barrier (other than lack of imagination) is no budget.
I need some free, or nearly, free ideas.

    Thanks

www.trafficology.com owuld be a nice start.

www.yahoo.com , join GROUPS related to your sites topics, post content rich posts, but include your url in the signature.

www.ezboard.com , add a board to your site, if applicable, then via ezboards web ring, link yourself to other similar boards. Post frequently, so people see you are active - and by that I mean, post on your board, but post on others as well, again including your link in the signature.

Exchange links here with similar sites.

www.yahoo.com , again at yahoo, create one of their free geo cities web sites, create links to your original site from there, and add yourself to geocities directory, so people visit.

www.paypal.com , if you have a paypal account, you can add any site that has paypal links into their directory of paypal sites. I get hits EVERY week from that directory.

That's just a FEW of the things you can do....

Along the lines of the Yahoo groups, answering questions in Google groups works too.

    Try TurboReferer.

    It's new and hot.
Actually there is nothing like it on the
    entire web.

    How it works:

    * You define how many sales you want for the referrer to win (say 2).
    * The referrer opens an account and invites his friends to your site.
    * When 2 of his friends buy your product then their referrer wins and gets it free too!

You can use TurboReferer in order to promote your sales (GET HIGH traffic) and your subscriptions too.

For example, if you have a newsletter you can offer
your product free for the referrer that will send you
    (say) 50 subscribers!

TurboReferer costs $57 but you can get it free
too if 3 of your friends order it.

    Visit http://www.turboreferer.com

    Thanks
    AP

If it's not an affiliate site (or if it's a deeplink to content) don't forget our old friend the Open Directory. And if it's a noncommercial site you can backdoor into Looksmart for free by using Zeal.com

dynamoo.com - geeky stuff for umm geeks.

Try http://www.51links.com/ and submit your site(s) to an appropriate category. You need a reciprocal link to them but if you list in a good category you can get a little bit of free traffic.

Please don't use that EZboard suggestion for a free forum. It's just plain old popup hell and even has driveby installs of the Gator parasite program. Good start is right here in the search engine section. You have to get into those SE's or your traffic will not rise enough to try other things like opt-in e-mail newsletter or sales flyer or the Turboreferer.com program script that require some traffic. Get into Altavista and google and buy some PPC low cost keywords at the smaller pay per click search engines like Findwhat. I all else fails then auction off your left foot at eBay. That'll get you noticed.

Thanks Mike, but I am not inclined to go with any forum at all. I really don't have the time to baby-sit a forum, and frankly, I am not sure it would help anyway. People just bookmark forums, and never visit the site again.

I guess I should submit my site again to the SE, but I am listed on all of them. Just not listed where I would like. Does it really help to submit your site again and again?

    Nope.

Forgot to add this before but try the abw banner exchange and see what happens, it's the only banner exchange I can recommend.

I second the suggestion for SelfPromotion.com. I used it early with my first site and it helped me avoide a lot of mistakes. Great tools for how to submit your site and lots of sites to submit to. I still use it to test my sites before submiting them.

    Good luck!

On a related, but unrelated note, I am always looking for fiction at my site, www.elbowcreek.com . I pay $20 for cowboy fiction or cowboy poetry, and I can provide a link to your site as part of your bio. If you have a site that relates to writing or fiction or cowboys, or western movies, write me a story, make $20 bucks, and generate some free traffic to your site through the link that will probably have a pagerank of 6.

Probably not useful for 95% of ya, but you never know, maybe there's a budding writer out there, lol.
