I was updating one of my sites today with some new products, and as often is the case I was searching for some background information.

I was slightly suprised then to see a UK merchant for said product (let's call it a BlueWidget+) with a product information page with *my* promotional copy for the previous model, the BlueWidget 1.0, just with a different photo.

A closer look at the site showed four other pages where the promotional text and even the product photos had been lifted straight from my site, word for word, spelling mistakes included.

Now, for these pages I'm currently the Google #1 result, but now this merchant, who I don't promote, has pinched the lot.

I'm pretty competitive with this merchant, normally they outrank me in Google, but for these pages, for for of them I have the Google #1 position.

So.. what to do? I emailed the sales director with a polite complaint and gave him a "get out" clause that he might have though I was using press release blurb... and a deadline of Friday to remove the offending material.

What would be my next steps? A DMCA complaint to Google.. anyone done that for an infringement from a UK site? Complain to their host (NTL)? Or just ignore it?

Send them a bill for content writing.

Seriously, I would write and nicely ask why they did that.

Yes, a DMCA complaint and if you are good terms as an affiliate with a merchant-in-common, send them an email also.

Well I asked them nicely, but I could be spending the weekend writing up a DMCA complaint. They've got much more to lose than me!

Dynamoo, I've had something similar-ish... my pages copied and hosted on a merchants server by one of their employees ( ).

I sent a cease and desist, email'd the company, their domain registrar and web host... the pages were gone within 24 hours.

Email everyone... be polite but clear and firm... you don't need to take this kind of crap.

Yup.. polite but firm worked, the pages now just say "Further information coming soon", and the person responsible has been disciplined.

I also gave them a reasonable deadline to sort it out.. by the end of Friday. I didn't say exactly what I was going to do.. I just left that up to their imagination

Absolutely, you don't want those merchants cluttering the place up
