Jerry Pournelle has written about spyware in this article at Byte. Of course it's nothing we don't already know ourselves, but frankly Jerry is one of the most respected names in IT journalism and a good ally to have on board.
As an aside, PC World magazine has had some good articles recently too.

Great insight into the normal surfers machines getting caught up in the Parasite/scumware/spyware trap for gorilla e-marketers. All these competing parasites, that kill our affiliate revenue streams, also trash millions of computers trying to hijack commissions and call home the perloined sellable privacy info. Many of these pose innocently as FREE "shopper helpers" but in reality the crooks behind them suck up every known piece of sellable info to feed their spam partners or turn your desktop into advertising hell.
The main group allowing these advertisers and Ad agency -list brokers -spammers to leverage Internet technology to bombard folks like us with Ads is the DMA -Direect Marketing Assoc. Yep the ones who brought you junk mail and telemarketers.
