I have carefully analysed ALL the links on Morpheus's Buyersport.com shopping portal. I conducted the analysis today (September 29) based on the links publicly displayed on Buyersport.com.

In total, 309 individual merchants are listed (some are listed multiple times)

All but 3 merchants belong to LinkShare, Commission Junction, BeFree or Performics.

In other words, if the 4 major affiliate networks weren't colluding with the parasites, THERE WOULD BE NO PARASITES!

By network, each network contributed the following number of sponsors:-

106 :: Linkshare
86 :: Commission Junction
68 :: BeFree
46 :: Performics
3 :: [independent affiliate programs]

Here is the full breakdown of Morpheus partner-merchants by network. The figures in () represent the number of times that merchant is listed in different store categories of the Buyersport.com site. If there's no number, the merchant only appears 1 time on the Buyersport.com site.

No. Software technology toolbars would still exist and technology would still be available for them. Granted networks make it a lot easier for this to exist (just as it makes it easier for all of us), but networks turning them off will NOT make them go away.

So ... ? That does not make it right for the networks to feed them.

When a farmer catches a skunk killing his chickens, he doesn't just sigh and say, well, there will always be skunks. No, he shoots the skunk. Furthermore, he cleans up places around the farm where skunks might hide, and warns his neighbours that skunks are in the area.

He certainly won't put up a feeding trough for skunks, and a guest room in the barn!!!

Could you give me the address of this farmer? I always wanted a Davy Crocket hat

Davy Crockett hats are made from raccoons, not skunks.

Elisabeth,

"So ... ? That does not make it right for the networks to feed them."

I didn't say it was right, only that it would not make them go away. I am being a realist.

I feel that the networks will let BuyersSport stand and exist as it does now because it is not overwriting links. I also feel that most networks will be ok with applications that do not actively interfere with intellectual property or overwrite affiliate or other links. Meaning if a user installs an application on their own accord and as long as their is some sort of manual work on the part of the user the networks will acquiesce.

Of course that is just my predication but it seems the logical middle ground. I have been known to be wrong and I do not speak or represent any network.

Again that is why I am urging affiliates to be proactive and take their own stances. That is why I urge AMs to take responsability for what they will or will not allow because it will come down to you.

I feel the networks WILL take action but I don't think the action will 100% satisfy everyone.

best,
Wayne

(Let me preface my reply by saying "I know this will never happen in the real world, but...")

Wayne, if all 4 affiliate networks jointly decided today that on October 15th (for instance - pick any date!) they would jointly:-

A) Delete all affiliate accounts belonging to parasiteware companies
B) Change their TOS to include a definition of parasiteware that justifies deleting any new affiliate accounts that parasiteware companies sign up under
C) Publish a long and detailed (yet simple and NON-TECHNICAL) joint press release explaining exactly WHY they took the actions in A) and B) above

then I believe the parasiteware companies would be dealt such a decisive blow that they could never get alternative plans to make up the revenue they'd be losing together in time i.e. before the entire industry wised up to what was going on.

The above action, taken by the 4 affiliate networks in question and involving no other parties, would IMO wipe out definitively the scourge of Parasiteware.

Your Honour, the prosecution rests its case

I think this is a very good point.

The vast majority of merchants are not set up and do not want to monitor ad impressions and track sales, which is why the affiliate networks exist. In order to strike deals with the parasites outside of a network environment, these considerations would have to be addressed.

And knowing up front that any outside agreement with a parasite will upset their other affiliates, I just don't think most are going to want to mess with it.

Besides, what do the parasites offer the public at large? A discount on purchases. They don't even tell you in some cases what the "rewards" are. There isn't any content to speak of, so they certainly aren't destination sites. They wouldn't survive.

Andy

That is a great Idea.
I like the A-B-C idea...

zillion's of people watch tv every day.

I have been in Hurricane, an Earthquake, Snow Storm. And seen what kind of impact they leave behind.

This issue of thievery is bigger that above.

To all of us that is trying so hard to make some money in the right way is harder, than to make it in a wrong way! Why is that?

But this so called proffesionals and who have the money already , will not give us a fair chance to make this business a long term success for both ends ( in an honest way! )
But of course some will say I am just dreaming.

I can't wait to see this thievery issue on the news.

Have a great week to everyone! :-)

Love Life to the fullest. we only get ONE chance! :-)

Edwin,

Good job! Ya know I've seen many of your posts where you stated you were a statsitics freak. I really believe it for sure now .

On a side note here is some more input you might want to consider. I saw your post on CJ this AM and I did a rough breakdown of performics as well.

I came up with some you missed but my list was based off the one posted in the parasiteware forum and not based on whats on their site so that may be part of it. I included the gator list as well which might be part of the discrepency too.

The descrencies are in the form of additions of:

Blair,
Magellans,
Michigan Bulb
Pacific Sunwear (Pacsun)
Proflowers
Sears Home Care center
Sears Rooms for kids
Sears Showplace
Ultimate Outlet
Verizon Wireless
Verizon DSL

You had some I missed too

I already posted this in the performics forum but I'll duplicate here for simplicity .

The way I see it, right around 40% of their total merchant pool is connected. I'd venture to say that this is probably the highest overall rate on a network / merchant basis.
