I actually installed this one while attempting to get another app on my system. It was bundled with what I was attempting to install.

This lovely program is brought to you by the folks at 247RealMedia/Exact Advertising.

I have not done any real formal testing with this one yet. Everything I've seen so far is just by causal observation from my normal surfing and a little bit of digging.

So far what I've seen with BargainBuddy is:

    * There is no obvious way to turn off BB. That is there is no end user interface for the software.
    * You just CAN'T turn to program off!!!! If you End Task the program (and that's assuming the average computer user would know how to do this and which processes to terminate), it will just keep turning itself back on!
    * BB runs 3rd party ads through it's program. I've seen both affiliate and straight advertising being served
    * There is nothing to indicate on the popups being served that the pops are originating from BB. That is, there is nothing on the pops themselves to let the end user know who is behind the popups. More advanced methods the average end user would not know have to be used to see that BB is behind the popups.
    * So far I have seen both BF and LS cookies being auto set through the popups
    * Several of the merchants who participate here are in BB's crosshairs for potential ad popups
    * Affiliate Networks and other ad companies are in BB's crosshairs for potential popups
    * Some affiliate site's are in their crosshairs for potential popups.
    * Will hijack auto search return and serve exact search listings.

Just with very causal observation of this software in action, it is obvious that they are NOT in compliance with the COC/Addendum that the Networks have on paper. But then, I wouldn't necessarily expect to see any enforcement in that regard.

I'll have more details once I've set up and performed formal testing.

It would seem almost anything is "in compliance" at the network level these days.

Of course, you opted in for this, right?

You knew beforehand that you wouldn't be able to turn it off, and that it would just turn itself back on if you did turn it off, didn't you?

You want this on your computer because of the added value you receive from it, correct?

This kind of cr@p is going to come back and bite the networks on the butt someday, it's pretty well documented now that they are allowing this to happen...and it is NOT in keeping with the CoC, although that "agreement" isn't worth the disc space it occupies.

Thanks for posting, Ms. B. I look forward to seeing what you uncover after you dig a bit deeper.

Perhaps this is the type of documentation that should be sent to the Senators investigating spyware. We have more likelyhood of a law protecting us from this crap than any enforcing of the COC by the networks. I gave up any hope of that when CJ admitted here that they are pro-actively promoting WhenU. They are hopelessly mired in the sewer.

Ok..lots and lots (and I mean lots) of affiliate sites are on the BB target list. Some of the folks here who have made it on the list are:

    Connie Berg
    Shawn Collins
    Anne
    EcomCity
    FatWallet
    Terrymc

That was just just a quick going over by me. Coupon sites appear to be listed quite heavily. Hmm...wonder why? There are many, many, many coupon sites being targeted. The couponers here probably know who the sites belong to better than I do.

If you want to know exactly who may be popping up on your domains through BB, email me and I'll give you the specifics so you can handle things as you see fit.

2 other notables that are being targeted are 247malls (but hey...she said she didn't care if someone else popped on her site and she did go right back to using 180) and dealdude. Nothing like poetic justice....

I'm forwarding the appropriate information directly to AM's as warranted.

Connie and Ms.B I'd love to know who popping on my site as a entry on a BHO target list by either merchant or affiliate. Be interesting to have the list for the CyberCrime units to do a DNA analysis of their application and neferious features. Mike @ecomcity.com

I recall a time not to long ago that most people here scoffed at the idea of a parasite actually targeting affiliate sites - kinda like many do with search engines now.

It's bad enought that the networks allow the thieves to openly operate in a finacial based environment where they know their mode of operation is performing identity theft type operations but when you add in that the parasites directly target affiliate and merchant sites alike as well as conditionally exlcude them "all of which the networks are fully aware of and actually contribute to" makes the networks "PARTICIPATION" even more questionable and likely accountable.

COC compliance is still and has always been a joke. All of the major networks involved in the COC have a board setup here and most participate in discussion.

I challange any of them as well as Stephen from Linkshare to address this issue.

I posted THIS a little earier tonight happypoon, I had to stop myself from saying things I might regret.
It is a bloody disgrace the the big 3 networks, not only do they not have the balls to tell the parasites where to go but like you say they are actually aiding and abetting this theft 100% now. I am dying for the FTC to get to grips with it.

I would love to hear what any of the networks has to say about it.
One day parasites and their ilk will be made illegal, I bet a few Lawyers will be pissed off when the day comes.

Ms B, how ungrateful of you. This application - FOR FREE - empowers you. And you turn you back on it. Just sad...

After 247malls went back to her ways, did any AM who gave her a second chance because she was ignorant of the issue, kick her?
