Some God-forsaken virus/parasite has my computer in a headlock and won't let go. Three days of slash and burn and I'm still getting these random pop up ads, even when the only browser I have open is a page on our site!

Two anti-virus programs, Ad-aware, Spybot S&D ... and plenty of manual deletions and still it survives.

If I ever find the person who developed this thing ...

Now Karl, don't you remember? You downloaded that app! That's right, you had to agree to their terms, because they would NEVER do a drive by install without your permission or knowledge. These software apps are upstanding netizens, the networks say so. They are in compliance.

And aren't those pop ups providing you with the value they promised they would? Think how boring your life would be without those constant, friendly little pop up reminders greeting you!

Don't fret, they'll get better given time. After the software phones home a few times with your key strokes and browsing habits, (perhaps a few credit card numbers, too!) the pop ups will become more relevant, offering even more value to you.

See there, it really isn't so bad, is it?

    </sarcasm>

Seriously Karl, I hope you fry the when you figure out who's behind it, and where it came from! I hate this cr@p, and I hate that the networks endorse it! Whether shopping comparison, rewards, whatever, if it's a software download, it's sleazy, IMO.

    Good luck with the exorcism...

    Andy

Karl you have to sometimes start at the root of the problem and contact the Ad whore friendly merchants showing up in those popups. Roast their balls over a flame or two to find out what perps are behind the malware.

    Karl,

Set your firewall to prompt. Reboot. Most will phone home at some time and you'll at least have the .exe file name. Some of these apps are generating random character file names now which make it hard for the removal apps to take care of them. ::sigh::

Hey Karl, I can relate. I had one of those a few weeks back.

Ms. B has the right idea. Set outgoing to prompt and start from there. Throw in Spy Wweeper as well. If you can start with a file name, do a search opn deja.com to see if you can find anything.

    Good luck buddy!

    Karl

Does the space under the Parasiteware banner at the top give you any info?

I was struggling to remove a Trojan for two days, and I came here because I saw your post and realised ABW was telling me something (it isn't immediately obvious). I think that's Chris Ditty's script kicking in.

The Trojan is now defunct, dead, kaputt, pushing up the daisies, pining for the fjords...

My scorched earth campaign appears to have turned the tide. Well, I guess we'll see for sure after the three-day weekend.

Ms. B, thanks for the tip. If the nasty beast survives the weekend, that'll be the first thing we do.

If you visit this forum while you are infected with a virus or trojan you get a warning at the top of the screen with instructions how to remove it. It's a script which (I think) Cditty supplied.

Let's hope you're clean now. Enjoy the long weekend!

Try running www.Trendmicro.com Housecall online virus checker as some trojan/adware/spyware perps disable Norton from the start menu and disable Norton's active status. The BHO wanks are now hiring hacker programmers and virus writers to target victim's machine defenses. Remove the buggers and then the computer virus opens the backdoor for re-infection.

Sent some samples the Beta Yahoo toolbar support folks for this re-infection trick. Seems Yahoo's OEM version of Pestpatrol spots them and removes or deletes them. The delete function forces a reboot where the buggers pop right back in via the trapdoor.

Agreed, let the experience be beneficial, besides of course the obvious empowered feeling you felt.

Make sure to inform your readers to set
    ActiveX to prompt:

    ********************

If you haven't already set your ActiveX to
    prompt, do the following:

Go to 'Tools', then 'Internet Options', then
'Security', then click on 'Custom Level'.
You will see about five references to ActiveX
at the top, any that are set to enable, change
to prompt. Then whenver you get an ActiveX
prompt, a box will pop up and ask if you want
to allow ActiveX, say no unless you really
trust the site. This is how most of this crap
    gets on your computer.
Since I changed my ActiveX to prompt and don't
allow it on my computer, I haven't gotten any
of this crap on my computer.
After you do this, run Adaware or Spybot Search
and Destroy to clean your computer.

Awesome idea! I also have a column that runs in one of our newspapers, so I'll use that, too.
