I got a call from someone wanting to sell me "development services". Among other things, he talked about how they could help me choose keywords and tweak my site for the search engines. I said I my rankings were okay at the moment. He said, yea, anyone can turn up #1 for an obscure enough search. (He clearly thought he was talking to a bimbo.) I told him a phrase to search for. The #1 page was mine, exactly on target. I gave a related phrase, the same page was #2. I offered more terms where I had pages in the top five. Finally he said, "We shouldn't be trying to sell to you, we should be trying to recruit you!"

A small, golden moment ... It's nice to be back in Google!

    Good for you, Elisabeth!

Can you give Miss Manners lessons? I got an email at a domain we recently purchased regarding "most effective advertising programs on the Net at a very inexpensive rate".

quote:
This advertising package includes 10,000 targeted co-registration leads that we generate for you at only $0.05 each ($500) that you will own and will be able to market to on a daily basis; then we are going to deliver 200,000 automatic consumer visits to your site via pop-under traffic ($1,000); third, we are going to serve 1,000,000 banner impressions on our network for your site ($2,000), and finally we are going to place an ad of yours in one of our Ezines that goes out to 300,000 + double opt-in consumers ($900). This campaign comes out to $4,400, but since this is a package deal, we are going to offer this 4 phase campaign to you for only $2,225.

One more note, if your company has a mailing list and is looking to use an email management system to send out those emails please let me know because we do offer this type of system to send out your emails (EM5000.com).

I requested from my business partner to tell me to politely tell him the site has been sold and we aren't interested instead of detailing what I really thought of the offerings (which I see no hint of TARGETTING in, thus my not so positive attitude). Unfortunately, he replied he didn't want to spoil my fun  .

BTW, Elisabeth, did you ever find that link to the article about member size and traffic size? I really feel it gets the point across.

    WTG Elizabeth,

I had some fun with a woman on the phone last week. I had just finished checking my rankings for some very heavy keywords on several of the engines, so I was armed for this one. She said that I had major problems with metatags. Stupid me, but I told her to type in some of my keywords at Google and she was impressed, but reminded me the metatags weren't read by Googlebot.

I told her to try the same keywords at AOL, MSN, Altavista & others. After a long pause she just said "wow" and thanked me for my time. Left her drooling on her keyboard. Made my day.
