It's time for my vacation!

I'm off to Salt Lake City to see the sights and not look at any HTML. I'll be leaving later today (Monday) and will be gone for a couple of weeks--although I'm sure to stop at any internet kiosks that get in the way, to satisfy my Stats addiction!

I hope all the fires that may have been in the way of the roads are out...

If you don't hear my big mouth for a couple of weeks , that's because I'm on vacation too - enjoying the fun and disgusting hot sun in Orlando, Florida .

Going to do my very best to get myself on TV as one of the parents that get "slimed" at Nickelodeon Studios - keep your fingers crossed - I want to be "slimmed" on National
TV

Finally back!

Salt Lake City, Utah It may be some people's idea of paradise, but it's not for me, due to the fact that they have:

No Smoking in any restaurants
NO CAFFEINE in Barq's (rendering it worthless)
Places dare to CLOSE UP

The streets have unmemorizable numbers on their signs, but NAMES on the MAPS! (frustration)

HOT HOT HOT 106 Degrees Farenheit heat wave while I was there! Too hot to check out anything which required foot travel!!!!!

The Salt Lake itself was something to see, though...even though some of Antelope Island park shut at 6 PM (don't they like customers??). There were a couple of herds of bison which we took lots of pix of...also some birds that don't come around Commerce could be seen and some of them actually stayed put long enough to get a pic.

The salt in the salt lake showed the differences between souvenir hawkers with some selling a little pack for 75c (attached to a postcard), while others sold a small vial for over $5.00.

In the plains states going to and from, the farms had been hit SEVERELY with drought except for those who managed to afford big-*ss sprinkler systems. But even the sprinkled farms had corn that was way too short looking and I think this contributed to a general tension which could be felt throughout the affected states. The people tried to act REALLY cheery but you could tell that there was something bothering them...even though the ppl I was talking to were not working in the agriculture industry (probably dealing with all the farmers with droughted crops affected the others mood...)

The only type of crop which did not seem to be affected by the drought was hay. But I had the feeling that 80% of those farms had started the season with no intentions of growing hay...

Finally hit Wisconsin on the way back which had tall crops and people who seemingly weren't quite so cheery but seemed more natural.

After Salt Lake City, went to Yellowstone Park (Wyoming), where there were about 2 "smoking" hotel rooms in the whole state. Gah!

Finally knew I was headed back toward the civilization I was accustomed to when the Barq's started to have caffeine in it, the hoteliers didn't look shocked that I didn't want a nicotine fit along with my stay, the checkout time went from 10:00 (HORRORS) to Noon (still too early). And there were lots of McDonaldses again. All that stuff about McD's being everywhere is Bull Hockey, we went all through the plains states and hardly saw any. But there were plenty of CLOSED-for-the-night mom & pops around. And night to them was only 9:00 PM, get real, the night hasn't even begun at that hour--that's mid-evening for cryin' out loud!!!

Chicago looked absolutely glorius with its 10000000000 (or so ) watts of NIGHTTIME LIGHTING POWER and traffic jam of cars driving around at 12:30 (yes, that's after midnight)!!! And the pop has caffeine in it like it ought to. To be webmaster fuel, it has to have that, otherwise there's no point in drinking it!!

I never had thought of Illinois and Michigan as really hip places but I guess they are. The most shocking thing on this trip was seeing how some places out west "rolled up their streets". The song "Midnight Girl in a Sunset Town" hadn't resonated much when it came out but now I can understand it! I have always been amazed at places that close. Don't their businesses like to make money??? I have given up trying to fathom the thought processes of places that close up when customers are still outside willing to do business!!! It's the direct reverse of the Net. Very frustrating, when you're used to being able to buy anything, anytime!

Kudos to the Village Inn (restaurant) in Salt Lake City, for staying open 24 hours on Friday Night, whether that fit in with the city or not. They were well rewarded with a packed house all night, and also on Saturday when they were open till 1 AM. Plus they know how to cook even though their Au Jus was a bit skimpy.

Biggest JEERS go to the gas stations at the west entrance of Yellowstone, for charging $1.79/gallon of gas (and calling that grade "midgrade" to boot--here it's "regular").

Coolest Landscape: Badlands, South Dakota

Funniest Sight: A dead tractor. About 1/4 mile up, a small oil well could be seen on the same land. It's as if the farmer stopped the tractor the second he heard oil had been found on his land, and never moved it again.

So much for traveling for a while! <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/ubb/icons/icon38.gif>
