Went to Myrtle Beach *briefly* this weekend...spent too much time in the sun (was only on the beach for a few hours sunday morning and early afternoon). For the first time in my life ended up getting sun poisoning...sheesh...went to the hospital and ended up spending last night there....I'm home now (and enjoying the painkillers the doc gave me ..

Blimey. I don't even go out in winter daylight without being plastered in so much sunblock I look like a ghost!

Aloe is a good suggestion. And try arnica too. Lots of vitamins help with skin regeneration - so many that I don't remember them all. Just take any you have lying round but don't overdo the vitamin A.

Tom, go to Wholefoods, your local "health foods store" or herb shop and get a big bottle of Swedish Bitters. Then go to the drugstore and get some cotton balls and dab the bitters on the sunburn. Best sunburn remedy I know. It will take the sting right out. Just don't put it on any areas of broken skin because it does have a small amount of alcohol to preserve the herbs (if you want dilute it some with water).

[spelling - it's "Bitters" not "biters" ]

Thanks gang...whats funny is I never get sunburn...I'm Native American...usually I get a kick-butt tan that would make most women jealous. I'm not sure about it, but I took some Benedryl to get rid of the hayfever....I think that may have had something to do with the burn...wasn't in the sun for more than a few hours. I have plenty of Aloe to go around (my wife has this icy gel made for sunburn..works wonders)...my favorite solution is the pain killers the doc gave me....hmmm What Sunburn?

Ummm, take it from experience, NO HOT SHOWERS! I had sun poisoning one time. Man, all I can remember is itching like crazy. Drove me nuts. Hope your now going through that yet. I hung out in a cold shower for a good part of a couple of days. Best of Luck!

Tom,

Feel better man. Probably wasn't the Benedryl, just the fact you're getting older. Happens to the best of us. Or either Myrtle Beach has got some kick *ss sun going on over there.

@Andy -- Now there's a mental image I'll keep with me the rest of the day.

I too will have a mental image for the rest of the day. Andy, don't know if saw the pic, but I kind of have that mohawk thing going on (take a look at the movie 'Indian in the Cupboard). Never thought I could get blisters on top of my ears...sheesh.

Take care Tom!
@eaglefire, Swedish Bitters works great!
Tom, you might want to give it a try...or you could put cucumber slices all over your head, now that would be a funny pic lol!

Sun poisoning...guess that's what we call sunstroke?

Don't know if there is a difference between sunstroke and sun poisoning. I new I had been burnt, and we made the 8 hour drive back...The whole way, I had extreme the chills very, very bad. I was just shaking from head to tow...It was a hot summer day, and here I am in the back seat of our car wearing 2 shirts and a blanket over me. Keeping warm made the burn hurt, however, it was choice of shaking so much and hurting from it (imagine goose bumps all over) or just being hot. Not to sound too graphic, but when we got home, I became violently ill (made the flu look minor). My wife insisted we go to the hospital, and of course my wife has the final say in most things
As far as Swedish Bitters, I've never seen this in stores. I will take the advice and take a look in our local health food store and see what I can get.

For future reference for you folks, there is a product called 'Ocean Potion' instant burn relief. It contains Aloe Vera, Lidocaine and some Tea Tree Extract. It feels icy cold on the skin, and it is instant relief. We picked some up at the beach, but my wife just found a huge bottle of it at our local Wal-Mart store. If you guys spend any time in the sun or get burned frequently, I highly suggest picking up a bottle.

It sounds like you had both Tom.
Sun stroke is too much sun (usually on the head or back of neck) it is usually followed by a feeling of intense cold and nausea.

It does not always happen that you get sunburnt (your skin goes red) at the same time but it seems like you got the double dose. Take care and get well soon.

Hope you heal soon!

And yes, Benadryl is known for causing increased sensitivity to the sun in some people, so I would say that was the cause of your distress.
