It's my bday today and girlfriend said she will buy me a 27in TV tomorrow. Any suggestions, I have an old 27in RCA, but i want to get a HDTV ready or it built in. Anybody have any suggestions, some good brands?

Depends on a bunch of factors.
Budget, Size, area that you will put it in, input yptes, amount of viewing, etc.
If you are getting around 27", tube tv and want top quality at top dollar, panasonic and sony have kick butt flat screen technology. i am more partial to the Sonys though. Good entry/mid level sets are the basic JVC and Hitachis. To quote Famous Footwear they are very "value priced" generally.
If you are looking forbig screens, I love the Hitachi sets. Amazing picture quality and I never had a problem with any of the ones I sold. Yes, I worked for a couple of big box retailers.

If you want some good info on the technology to get you up to speed, try this site:

That links goes to the HDTV info, but they have good info on everything. I can't remember the US equivalent to that site that I had, sorry.

Summary:
brands I have had good success with in tube tvs:
Sony, Hitachi, JVC, Some Samsung models.

brands I won't go near:
RCA - My last month I had 5 returns and 2 replacements due to sets not working.
In their defence, my previous TV was a 1981 Color RCA 27" Console of theirs. Lasted 21 years.
Prima - Fantastic Price, sometimes they work.
Daewoo - picture seemed fine(not as good as the big 3 though), but had a few complaints regarding sound.
Sansui - Same issues as Daewoo
Lower end Samsung models.

For projos - (big screen)
Hitachi are far and away my personal favorite.
Sonys are good.
Samsung Tantus surprised me with how good it handled itself.
Pioneer - little pricey but ecellent quality.
Thats just a quick (but long ) summary of my thoughts on tvs.
Hope that or the link helps.

I am a stat addict.
