I was writing an e-mail to my brother about my son's last baseball game of the year. It got so long, I turned it into a column.

If you love kids and have patience with "proud papa" talk, enjoy ...

    Hey Karl
Nice article. I'm thinking of putting a brief blurb and link to it from my sports site bvaseball page if you don't mind.
If it is possible, does the article stay on that url or do they change so it can be left as is on my site.
    Let me know
    Thanks

What a great story, Karl! Your son may not realize this now, but he's a lucky guy to have a Father that is able to spend time with him at his age.

I have a great Dad too, but he was so busy building his business when I was your son's age, I hardly remember him being around for some of the extra curricular activities.

    Thanks for sharing with us.

Karl, what a great column. I really enjoy your writing style, and hearing about your family.

Reading that story was bittersweet for me. You probably hear this all the time, but enjoy these moments while you can...I don't know if you have any older children, but little league doesn't stay that innocent for too much longer. I cherish the 6-hour games where we didn't keep score, where every kid got to play, where the coaches just had to chuckle when the kids got the plays all wrong or ran the wrong way.

Now that my son has just completed intermediates in little league, and will be playing in the travelling team, I have to sometimes keep forcing myself to remember the days when my son was in T ball. When the coaches yell at the umpires and at each other, when the kids lose their temper and kick the helmets and get thrown out of the game, when the parents let loose on their son because of a "stupid" mistake he made...I try to remember the days when we got excited just to see our kids all dressed up in their uniforms, marching proudly into their dugout.

So keep it as fresh as you can for as long as you can...they do grow up so fast.

    Patrice:

    Thanks for the kind words.

I empathize with your situation. I umpired youth baseball and softball for some 15 years and also ogranized tournaments and coached for several years. In all those roles, I always emphasized that these things were all about having FUN. Yes, the kids should learn about the sport and winning and losing. But they should also learn about respect and how to behave, and they should learn that from the example set by the adults around them.

People often ask me why I spend so much time working with the senior high kids at our church, and the answer is simple - Because there are so many adults who are giving them poor examples, either directly or tacitly.

Off the soapbox for now. Thanks again for the kind words. I do treasure these moments!

Well, the world needs more coaches like you, then, Karl! My son's father is his coach, and he's one of the good ones, too, but in a league with so many bloodthirsty coaches AND PARENTS, it's hard to keep your chin up.

But why dwell on all that?? Your son is in his T ball prime. What a time!

That is a great story Karl, if we ever run into each other, I've got a few similar baseball stories with my son, he's in the major leagues now, but each year has held greater and just as memorable moments, diving grabs to catch the ball, driving in the winning run, pitching a great game. Then it's on to football and the great tackles and basketball and the great shots and steals. He's my hobby right now, we don't know what to do if there's not a game, so sometimes we break out the xbox and make our own little leagues, hehe. I like it so much, and the good thing is, I get to start over here in a few years with my new kid, hehe, and then we'll be watching older brother on the weekends.
