Ty all. Just got word that she's still in ICU, but they have her resting at the moment. At the moment they have finally been able to stop the seizures.

Guess I'll go back to my nervous energy house cleaning.

I am so sorry to hear this! You are all in my prayers. Glad to hear they have her seizures under control. These little ones are amazing, they bounce back so quickly.

    Thanks cazzie and all.

They don't really have them under control at this time. They just had her so heavily medicated with dilantin last night. She had at least 5 seizures yesterday, the last one being a full grand mal that they had difficulty stopping. At that time they were very concerned because of the amount of medicine they had already had to give her, but they really have no choice but to continue to medicate to try to stop the seizure (a prolonged grand mal can become a life threatening situation). Dilatin acts like a barbituate, so I'm sure she was just knocked out from the meds by last night. They will be doing an MRI today to see if there is an underlying cause for the seizures. If there is nothing, the baby has epilepsy. Because of some problems she had when she was smaller, I'll feel a lot better when they've finished their testing and it all comes back clear. Sometime's my medical background isn't such a good thing. Not much sleep over this way last night. Sure wish I could be with her and my sister right now. All you can really do is say a prayer and hope for the best.

I saw a show on exactly this on Dateline NBC about a week ago, where a high fat diet (ketogenic diet) eliminates 50-70% of the cases. Later you can take them off the diet. 50-70% of the cases, something to look into. Heres link.

    http://www.msnbc.com/news/900136.asp?0sl=-41

    John Hopkins link on this:

    Another one on subject:

Not widely known because drug companies don't make any money on high fat diets. Hope everything will be ok.

I can second the idea behind looking at this diet plan. I was engrossed watching it and amazed by how helpful it was.
Ms B we really hope she pulls through this.
The worst part is the helplessness watching them suffer.
Breaks my heart just seeing kids dealing with chemo when I go for treatments. They don't deserve to have to go through these problems.
I can't even comprehend how much it must weigh on families it affects. I know what I must deal with and could't bear to think of it if it was happening to one on my kids.
Our thoughts will be with you and your family and hope all goes well. Be strong. Have faith.

    Ms. B.
I just got back from a weekend away and found this thread.
I'm not a doctor and I don't know if epileptiform brain activity is specific to epileptic seizures, or is also involved in grand mal seizures, but -
Mozart's music can significantly reduce epileptiform brain activity:

My thoughts and best wishes are with your niece and your family

Trust thanks for the link. I remember reading/hearing about some type of keto diet a couple of years ago. It was developed at the Mayo Clinic. Been a good while back now and can't remember if it was for epilepsy, but it was some type of neurologic disorder.

WW..yes it is. When I was still working in healthcare, my ped cases were some of the most rewarding and heartbreaking. I'm glad there are people in this world who can work with children for extended periods of time. It takes a special person to work in places like pediatric ICU and oncology.

Radegast, yes that is the same thing. And Mozart has been shown to decrease the activity.

Right now they are trying to determine if there it is just epilepsy or if it's a symptom of something more serious. She had mild hydrocephalous at around 7 months which seemed to have resolved itself. So I'm sure they are thinking about that. But beings she threw up just prior to the first seizure, I think they are wanting to do a thorough workup. The vomiting can be a sign of increased pressure in the head along with seizures. They were doing more tests today and we are still waiting to hear back.
