Like any disaster, people that are not in the area, start calling like crazy, trying to talk to friends and relatives, jeesh... if the system is down, any outside calls into the area will overload any temporary emergency systems that are still working....

I would suggest just watching the news and gab about it after the power returns.

Let me add, there goes the dammed north east sales!!!!

Watching the pictures from New York, crazy. Just seeing all those people in the streets. People stuck in elevators must be freaking out.

It is amazing watching all those people walking though the highways and streets of New York
Mayor of New York is hoping dearly for some Canadian power to help out. Looks like power overload due to heat. If we can't help militarily, at least we have power.
It says it is a problem for areas covering 24,000 miles in total.

I suspect more than north east sales will be gone for a bit. This should warrant enough interest all over and not just in the areas effected to keep ppl glued to TV's rather than their computers .

I am in Northern MI and when it went out in NY, Detroit, etc., the power here at the house dimmed then came back. About 9 miles from here it went totally out, then came back.

Crossing my fingers that it stays on here.

It only went out for 5 minutes at the Jersey Shore (less than it normally does when its over 90) So far... Hmm 95 degrees and a single transformer goes in a continually maintained grid and people wonder why 40 year old power plants in Iraq in 140 degree heat don't work perfectly

I must be a total web addict. As soon as I saw this post I jumped around the online news trying to find PICTURES. Never even thought to turn on TV until someone here mentioned CNN.

Sales are going to dip. Hopefully just short-lived!

Haiko's in NY wonder if he can get online. WOnder if many sites and Internet hops will be shut down? This site seems to be running really slow.

CNN.. didn't think of that. Wowsers.

In the UK we continually moan about the trains not working, the hospitals being overstretched, but we never get huge blackouts like this.

    Scary stuff. Hmmm. UPSes

I just hope everyone comes out of this safely. The heat is going to be the big factor, especially for babies, the elderly, and the handicapped. I sure hope no deathls result. I suppose it's a good thing for the heat it happened later in the day and not at noon.

We just got our power back for the third time, hopefully it stays on now. All cell phones were not operating. All flights have been canceled. Of course the usual traffic light problems. Keeping my fingers crossed it stays on. It went out at 4:10 and came back at 7:10. It seems Long Island is working with its own generators right now so power is limited but at least we have it.

    YAAAAHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! POWER JUST CAME BACK

Brought back bad memories of a Labor Day storm that hit us several years ago and the power was out several days.

Still alot of people without power but they are expecting most to have it back by morning.

Ummm, Did I say YAAAAHHHOOOOOO Yet?

The kind of scary thing was that my daughter had a game at 4:00 today to play in a real stadium here in Syracuse. The score board went dead and the anouncer stopped anouncing the games just before the game started. Then someone there got a call on the cell phone saying that the power was out throughout the Northeast but didn't know why yet. Then within a few minutes after the phone call at the stadium, we saw 2 jets armed to the teeth scramble from the base We still didn't think much of it. Thank God it was nothing but it was nice to tune into a radio to see what was actually going on.

My fingers are crossed for the rest of you who are still in the dark. Need to go crank the Central Air

Has anyone heard if Haiko is without power still??

Glad you got your power back Packy. I recently went through 23 hours without power, but I was expecting it. Got to be so different when it's so widespread without warning. Must of have scary for folks until they started hearing what was going on.

    Thanks Ms.B

One thing I have to say is it is reasuring how fast the emergency system went into play with jets scrambling and I can imagine a bunch of other things happening. News around here so far is it might of stated in Canada or actually around here. Niagra Mohawk is holding a conference right now saying they are investigating where it started and can't rule themselves out yet. Sounds like a lot of NYC will get their power back on in the next couple of hours

It sounds like all the power companies are good to go but have to do it in a timely matter so's not to burn stuff out and so on and so they can regulate it the right way. Yup, 23 hours is a long time. I did make sure I grabbed a few bags of ice on the way home just in case

DFLSports is about 15 minutes from me. I wonder if he is back on yet ro if he even lost power???

It's pretty sad though how one grid can effect tens of millions of people in the year 2003

The news this morning said that 50 million people were without power at one point.

All the focus was on NYC, but I guess New York is about the most prepared city for this kind of thing. No news about places like Detroit and Toronto though.
