For the past few days I spend my time checking stats, checking email, reading ABW, checking stats again, checking email again, ...

But I don't do the website work that I know I should be doing. I have several merchants' pages partly done, and I know it isn't even a lot of work to get them finished. But I just don't do them.

I know, I'll go have some lunch, then I'll be back and REALLY get to work. But I probably won't, since that's what I've been pretending for a while now.

What do you folks do when you can't get motivated? Wait for inspiration to hit? Force yourself? Take a vacation? Get a J*b? (no, not that!)

I start cleaning house and doing laundry. It doesn't take long before I decide it's more fun making and updating pages.

I just step away and find somethig else to do. It is so easy to lose motivation

It happened to me last week. I just could not motivate myself to do any work. Today, conversly, I have created over 400 pages, and my fingers are aching

I always get back into it. I just need a short break every now and again, even if it is most of a day

    Hi neighbor,

I'm sorry you are in a funk at the moment, Donna, I'm sure it's just the adrenaline wearing off after the Christmas rush.

Whenever I am in a funk, I normally leave whatever it is I am doing alone, and goof off in forums where I can tax my brain in other areas. Either that or I will soak in the jacuzzi for an hour or so and that normally revitalizes me.

We'll definitely have to meet for lunch in the New Year, once the *after Christmas rush* is over.

    Diane

In a smallfunk, I give myself goals- five more pages and I'll read a chapter in my book type things.

For a large funk-I find someone else to work. Recently, I have gone about three months with no signifigant work despite a todo list miles long. I offered a designer a job taking some of my projects. As I sit down with him, I get new ideas and somehow the are easier to implement- I know what it cost not to do it myself and I want to keep up, and the new ideas are more energizing than the stale ones I have had on my plate for months.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

OK, So I'll go have some lunch, do some housework, try to stay away from the computer for a while, and not worry about it.

I'm already getting depressed because I know all these nice commissions are going to slow way down. It's so easy to get used to the high numbers.

Maybe I need a vacation. When I had 2 weeks in Holland in Sept/Oct I got a lot of work done before and after. That's it. I'll take a vacation.

I take a 30-minute break and then look at my bills.

    Seems to work every time.

Take a long walk and/or a day off.

The world comes to an end every day for me so the motivation is there. I still can't work because I get so frustrated I don't know where to begin.

I never do a 'to do list' It would get too long, and I would never finish most of what was on the list.

I may start something new tomorrow, or I may go back to something I started 6 months ago (which I really should have finished a long time ago)

The motivation comes from having the ability to decide what you do, and when you do it, and not be told that you should do this or that before you can go home.

I just ask my gf "how was work today" or ask other people the same question, then listen to so and so said this about, and so and so is a "fill in the blank" or i have to ask about getting this day off. Being your own boss, great motivation.

This is the time of the year where you really shouldn't be doing anything at all to your site. As for the people who have the job of putting things in boxes, this is the time to be hustling.

I've done all that except get a j*b. It depends on the time of year. At some times, it would get costly to stop making pages even though I'd rather be playing some game. For instance, I did quite a bit of "forcing myself" to make pages when there was still time to get them indexed in time for the Christmas shopping rush!

But right about now, I'm as unmotivated as you and yesterday I made a decision: Even though I'm not traveling anywhere now, I'm taking a vacation until after Christmas! This mental shift allows my batteries to recharge since my mind isn't being taxed with thoughts of what I "should be" doing.

But after New Year's it'll be time for the site facelifts and changing the copyright dates. Once I get done with that boring tedium I am usually ready to do something more creative and the yearly cycle starts to roll...

    OK, here's the plan.

I had lunch and read a book for a while, then I was planning to go outside and pull some weeds, but it got cooler than I hoped, so instead I phoned my sister and invited her to drop in.

I listened to her complain about her j*b, and we agreed to go ride our horses in the morning.

    Maybe tomorrow afternoon I'll feel like making pages, and maybe I won't. If I don't, I won't. I'm on a mini vacation.

If I still haven't gotten back into the mood after Christmas I'll possibly force myself, but until then, whatever happens is good enough for me.

    I'm a creature of habit.

For me there's a certain part of the day when it's easiest to start working on this stuff. If I don't start then I probably won't do anything useful on web work that day at all.

I spend my mornings checking stats and running errands, shopping, etc. Then comes lunch.

Then comes the "golden time" -- early afternoon -- when I'm full, relaxed but not tired yet, and my brain just seems to work better.

That's when I start making pages. I've found if I don't start working at my "best time" of the day, I just won't get to it at all.

But once I start I get involved in the details and don't notice the time going by.

Knowing how critical it is -- for me, anyhow -- to start working *right after* lunch helps me not let the moment slip by by putting it off for "just a little longer."

So for me, planning my work schedule for a specific time each day really helps.

I find I need motivation most of the time.

I think about why I am doing this, and then I think about the money that I will make if I work harder. (I should tell you, nothing usually happens at this point). Now all I have to do is take a drive, and see all of the things that I would like to have, or I even go see where I used to live (compare it to where I am now, and where I want to be). Now I am finally motivated.

If that doesn't work, then it's time to hit the narcotics in the medicine chest. (Okay ! I'm joking).

Really though, I do have to re-examine why I am doing this sometimes. Sometimes you just get burned out - take a break.

Good luck, I know it's no fun without the motivation.

Hmmm...It seems a number of folks in the Northern hemisphere are feeling "blah" lately. For them it could be Seasonal Affective Disorder -- the sluggishness and lack of energy triggered by fewer hours of sunlight.

The shortest day of the year for us happens next week.

A common treatment is to have timer-controlled bright lights come on in the bedroom before you normally wake up, to replace the missing sunlight.

A low-tech approach -- if you have East-facing or South-facing bedroom windows -- might be to leave the drapes open so the morning sunlight wakes you naturally.

I think I'm going to try that myself.

Feeling the same way Donna is here - doing as little as she is it seems! Running out of reports to log in and look at LOL

I've decided as soon as Christmas is over I'm going to restructure my main website - not only that, I've decided to have a merchant CLEANOUT!

This is my first full year of affiliate marketing so I now have better ideas of who is good and who isn't - if a merchant could not even convert over Xmas shopping season, sorry, bye bye! I want to cut down my Linkshare merchants drastically - earning enough to get individual cheques from some of them is a pain in the neck! I'm going to try to make a go of the ones that I've had sales with. CJ merchants will not be cut out so much.... just the ones that reverse nearly everything.

My goal for 2004 is to simplify and put more work into the projects and themes I choose.

    Merry Christmas ABW!

So we went riding this morning, and we plan to go again tomorrow.

The weather was nice, so I gave Can Can a bath before I went home. I put him back in his pasture, picked up my things and headed home. I glanced back at the pasture as I was leaving. He had gone to his favorite dirt patch and undone all the good his bath had done, and then some. And I happened to have my camera in my hand...

    Hello Can Can,

just like a kid, cleaned them up to send them out and play on the dirt.

Thanks for sharing the pic Miss Donna.

LOL - excuse me for laughing, Donna, but one of my dogs is known for doing the very same thing. What is with these critters?

Do you board Can Can on the Peninsula? I used to walk the trails from the Ernie Howlett Park, under the Hawthorne and Crenshaw tunnels, then down PV Drive North and back home. It's so beautiful and peaceful I used to love it.
