No sign that they offer or will offer any support for ASP or dotNet functions. Can't use 'em.

What kind of Operating System do you use? With our Professional package, you’re hosted on 1&1’s Linux Servers – benefiting from a specially optimized Linux kernel. Our full launch in January will unleash our wide Windows Server 2003 range.

    and

FYI -- If you go to webhostingtalk.com -- a GREAT forum to find out about various web hosts -- and search "1and1," you'll get a ton of posts about this company.

I read a number of those posts, and they have almost NOTHING good to say about this company and their free offer. Biggest criticism is that they seem to be VERY poor about responding to support email.

How much support do you expect for free?

Quite right! I just wanted to post as an FYI for those who feel a need for support. Some folks are quite comfortable doing a lot with their web accounts, others need more hand-holding. My guess is these guys have no hand-holding available.

Tis a good point. I wouldn't advise anyone to put anything important on any account you receive for free from anyone.

I host with their UK sister company and have no complaints. If they're offering their professional package free there's not much to lose in grabbing it!
Perhaps their response to e-mails isn't the fastest.
If slick support is important to you may be better off paying accordingly.
(I recently upgraded to the 'business package' which ofers telephone support. Haven't used it yet.)

This isn't the account where my main businesses will run as I require huge database space and lots of hand-holding when something goes wrong. But, the price seems right for one no-profit, low-maintenance site of mine that doesn't use ASP so I'll give it a free 3 year try.

If you get what you pay for, I should break even.

    Happy New Year!

Well I signed up and other than the fact that the control panel is slower than all get out, I can't get my email to work.

I set up the account yesterday. Today I set it up in my email program and it keeps telling me my username or password are incorrect, and won't let me send or receive.

Next I went to their webmail and logged right in using that username and password. I can send mail from the webmail account, but I can't receive mail. When I try to mail that account from a different one it bounces back with the error message:

Remote host said: 553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)
    Giving up.

    This one has me stumped.

Could it be a DNS propogation issue (takes a few days sometimes for a new host name to seed through the system)?

I am thinking that the problem has something to do with the fact that the domain name is registered with someone other than 1and1.

I think I have to go to the activate external domain names section of the email section and select that domain name and activate it.

    Hope I am right....LOL

    Update:

Well crap.... when I try to do that I just get an error page on their site.

Guess I will just buy an email through the same company as the domain is registered through

    sil

    In general, not bad.

Once you get everthing you need set up in the control panel and don't have to go back, life is good! *LOL* Their control panel is rea---ll--y slooooooowww.

Another downfall is if you create an new email, it takes like 3 hours to be active, same if you make any other changes similiar to email.

Most of my email problems seem to stem from the fact that my domain name is registered elsewhere.

The site itself is pretty fast.

I am still plugging along figuring it all out.
