Don,

In the short time we were friends, you touched my life and made it better...thank you...

This was Don's post announcing his departure...

quote:
Amazing how things work out during life's little struggles.

Last year, on April 16th - I was awake most of the night with pain that I easily attributed to my gall-bladder. Being the quarrelsome ol' bastard that I am, I waited until 0800 (a couple hours after my lovely bride had gone to work) to actually go to the emergency room; although I had been in severe pain throughout the night.

The folks at Torrance Memorial Hospital were true gems in the fact that, while looking at my gall-bladder for problems - they found that I had cancer in my left kidney. The kidney was removed, and all appeared well for a substantial amount of time.

Well, I am one of those ridiculously anal-retentive folks who want to not only know what is wrong; but also what will be wrong in the future. Thus, I began my odyssey into the rhelm of cancer in general, and kidney-cancer in particular.

Lo and behold, my multitude of hours of research drove me to the conclusion that I (because of my history - medical and otherwise) would eventually come down with cancer in another - more deadly and painful - type of cancer within a year or two, simply because of the type of cancer present in my kidney at that time.

Well, fellow ABestWeb friends, today all of my most formidable fears were realized.

I have lung-cancer, and my chances of survival for any significant period of time are nil.

My reason for writing this to you folks is simple actually - for some time now, you have been family, antagonists, and friends. Thus, I felt an obligation to let you know what is going on - prior to most.

In actuality; and ironically, I will probably be spending even more time on this board than I have previously - simply because I have been told that I will be bedridden at the least, and house-bound at the best for some time in the near future.

I want you all to know that I appreciate you. Further, I thank you all (yes, Ssanf - even you) for allowing me into your world. I plan to spend my last days doing every damned thing I have ever wanted to do - but decided to put off for whatever reason.

My very best to you all....

Don was a GREAT one, he will be missed by many!

You will NOT be forgotten my friend, God speed!

I did try to call him (over a few days with six dofferent numbers) as I said I would but it was for naught. I spoke to Wayne shortly thereafter and he said Don really wasn't doing well.

Don and him calling telling people, "listen here pal" has sure been missed by me.

He was truely a character of rare form. My thoughts and sympathy for his loss go out to all his friends and family.

I have missed Don in these forums for quite some time now. I'm sad to hear he has passed however I can't even begin to imagine the suffering he must have endured the last few months so I am happy to think his pain is over.

I don't know Don's close friends or family but if any of you read this I am sorry for your loss.

My thoughts and concerns were with Don since he announced this. We spoke a few times via private message in here.
Living with this hellish disease is beyond understanding for anyone not cursed by it, so we at least shared a few words about some things in private.
Wish I could say more but hearing this hurts big time, making it tough to sum up the proper words for him.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his surviving family.
    Take care my friend.

Gosh, that's just terrible news, I was hoping so much that he could fight that off. If his family happens to read this, please know you have my sympathies.

I am saddened to hear of Don's passing.

I always enjoyed what he wrote and loved his wit.

I was missing his posts on the boards for some time and will continue to do so with a heavy heart now.

He seemed to be a true gentleman.

I'd hoped to meet him someday -- he lived about 30 minutes away from me. But now I never will.

There seems to be a gray pall over everything right now.

Thank you Andy for posting what -if I'm not mistaken- was Don's last post. I feel so sad in thinking that he couldn't even post more often like he planned to do.

I knew it was bad, but I was really rooting for him, hoping he'd beat the odds.

    A sad day indeed...
