... building a community is more difficult than building sales!

I'm just hedging my bets, should the SEs make a concerted effort to oust what they feel are "spammy" sites.

Oh..look a topic baiting Leader into a CONTENT/SALE debate! Even going as far as to insinuate sale sites are nothing but ! And may even soon be extinct!

Oh this should be good!

I'm not trying to bait topics. I'm working on transitioning one of my hybrid content/sales sites into a community where people can discuss the topic at hand, while somehow not uprooting the money tree. The site has hit a plateau in terms of sales and traffic. I looked at what the competition in my keyword sector was doing and saw where they missed the boat on monetizing their assets.

I'm building my assets and found that my sales sites are consequently suffering

I don't insinuate that sales sites are spam. On the contrary, if someone's looking for a product and I put it in front of the customer, where's the harm?

I said the SEs might, in the future, regard them as such.

Now if I were targetting the term "Children's Shoes" and served up a sales pitch for Viagra, I would be a search engine spammer.

That may be but if you are selling Viagra I think there could be a future need for childrens shoes.

It must be turning out to be quite a bit of w*rk, for you to bother posting that! What kind of things are you having in your community site, anyway? Forums or ~?

Lots of work, yes. I see huge rewards if I can pull it off, though.

Forums, yes. Other stuff, yes.

Forums are easy. Other stuff is not.

The idea for my community came after a community I have participated in for years decided to add Gator and WhenU drivebys to their ad server. I became vocal and they went away within 15 minutes. Pop-ups started after that. EVERYONE became vocal and the pops were gone in a half hour. Now they have horribly untargetted banners "above the fold".

I should mention this community is hosted by an ecommerce firm that mentions their store in all of three places in their forum.

I got this close -><- to telling them how to increase their bottom line without torturing everyone.

Then I realized my bottom line could use a little boost.

The only thing I would add is to be sure the the community tool (forum software) is search engine friendly. User-created content is great search-engine fodder, but some of the forum programs use session id's which most of the search engines (including Google) don't handle very well.
I have one huge site with tons of great content hidden in the forums, but I unwisely chose a forum tool that uses session id's. Google visits the front page every 2-3 days, but never goes any further.

I'm using Snitz. An allinurl search reveals that topics are getting indexed.

My basic rule is.. do whatever works for you. Building a site with a sufficiently good unique selling proposition isn't like painting by numbers - so try stuff out, if it works for you then that's great.

Although I have to admit that when I stopped trying to prove Leader wrong and started following her advice I did begin to make a lot more money

Well, the next phase is coming together nicely. It's starting to feel less like work and more like playing a game.

The "Other Stuff" has taken on a life of its own. I started with a simple idea, and it has morphed into this "thing" that has consumed every last little bit of energy from my brain.

Needless to say, I haven't been building any sales pages for the last month and a half. I'm anxious to get this done so I can get back to building revenue pages.

Just when I'm ready to test the last feature (of this phase), my computer just hangs. I can click links all day long and I get NOTHING. The HTML reacts within the browser, the Javascript reacts within the browser, but I get nothing in terms of server response.

Time for bed.

phpbb is pretty good, but you have to install the google mod, which removes session id's for the search engine crawlers.

Snitz is a-ok in terms of spiderability.

I have some surprising listings from the off-topic area.

I scoped it out this morning, I'm not done yet.

The code is looking for a category assignment. Without an assignment, it says "nothing here boss, have an exception error as a token of my ingratitude."

I left the option of "unassigned" in the user form.

I can't fix it right now: I'm at work.
