    Hey kids,

I've noticed there are a lot of us living in upstate NY, and I wondered if a get-together had ever been organized.

Would any of you be willing to meet somewhere for a "getting to know you" session? I was thinking Albany, but maybe you have a better or more central location.

I'm in! Albany is convenient for me. Lake Placid is more so but probably not for a lot of others.

Albany is easy for NY City-folk, too.

Are you thinking of this Summer or perhaps the Fall?

NS, I was thinking Summer. Being new to the area I don't even know of any places where we could meet. I'm partial to doing something outdoors, like at a State Park where we could barbecue and hang out in an informal way. Kind of a pot luck thing with everyone bringing food and drink to share.

If it is Albany and when you set a date, I'll ask BigDaddy to drop by and buy some beverages.

Thacher State Park a nice State Park about 15 miles from Albany. Spent a little time hiking there quite a while ago.

lol! How about deer fly and black fly free? I'm tired of donating blood to the local winged menaces.

    Thatcher State Park

They have picnic tables and nature walks on Saturdays. Excellent. Do they allow barbecuing?

Guaranteed to be free of Black flies though likely to be mosquitos. Always a chance of Lyme Disease from deer ticks so it's recommended to run Spybot & check yourself thoroughly when returning indoors. They're not really parasitic though, I suppose.

You might pick up ringworm buy rolling around in bear droppings, I guess.

Rhea, most of the State Parks with picnic areas & pavillions I've been to have free-standing barbeques. I haven't been to Thatcher in ages so I can't recall for sure. I'll check.

Don't worry, come on up Lizabeth,

I was married to a midwife for 15 years and learned a few of the tricks of the trade. Came in handy a few years ago at a Christmas party in rural Vermont when my friend's neighbor couldn't make it to the end of their road, much less the hospital up in St. Albans. I caught her baby girl on the living room floor and we all survived to tell about it.

Count me in as well! I'm only 1.5 hours from Albany. Dapackster is also only minutes from my place so he might be interested? Also Ross from DIYautoparts.com. Loxley is in Rochester.

Outdoors stuff is fine with me unless anyone feels like making a deposit at Turning Stone Casino?

If we include the down staters there is lots of places in the Catskills that seem meeting friendly and have outdoor activities (though I have never been there, recenlty did some research for weekned getaway)

    Lol DFL,

I was just thinking the same thing about the Turning Stone casino. They have a lot of rooms there, plus they have the Turning Stone Inn which we could probably grab rooms for $50.00 or so dollars. Plus if you stay at the Inn, you have rights to everything at the casino including pool and so on. It is a thought

Yeah, it was a big deal down at the local bakery for a few minutes the next morning. But Vermonter's take this stuff in stride. A great experience for all of us; one that nobody want to repeat, however.

    DFLsports:
I used to live in the Catskills and did a lot of hiking, biking, canoeing there. Thatcher is just a short hop to the north in the Helderburg Mountains, I believe and you can see the Catskills from there.

Lots of great trips within an hour or so of Albany, including the casino, Saratoga Springs, the Berkshires. Albany has two good museums & a great Mexican restaurant.

Never been to Turning Stone (or any casino for that matter.) I'm camping out regardless, so it doesn't matter to me as long as I'm not in the middle of a city.

OMG I would give some important body parts to be able to jump in a pool RIGHT NOW. Currently, its 88 deg in downtown Syracuse. And I thought I wouldn't miss the 12' of snow we got....

Well, lets throw some dates around! If we do the Casino meeting, my wife and I usually get coupons for a free night at the inn so we could get someone a free room. The casino is nice but I just lost a boat load at the Seneca Niagara casino but that would not stop me from trying my luck again.

Camping/bbq sounds fun as well. I have not camped out in years and my 4 year old would probably like that.

I do not have any concrete plns in July or August so I think just about any weekend is open. Unless you guys were thinking of a mid week event which I could also attend.

As it is "hit or miss" with me because of the baby's due date I will try to make whatever date you all pick.

I think that a picnic is a great idea, Casino weekend could get a little expensive for all. One weekend to stay away from around here is Travers Weekend in Saratoga Springs which I believe around August 22nd or so.

How about early August? Preferences as far as weekend or weekday? I'm in favor of doing a simple outdoor thing. It's summer. Who wants to sit in a hotel meeting room?

July or August is fine with me. Weekday or weekend doesn't matter. I'm partial to the idea of having a cookout but don't count on me pitching a tent. Campground hygiene (or lack thereof) shkeevs me out.

Should we do a couple of polls to find out preferences?

Albany is 4 hours from Rochester, but I think I could make it TJ is from here too, but not sure if he could get away from the kids Also, Herb is from Canandaigua that is right in the Rochester area too. Any Buffalonians? (Yes I just made that up!) I could probably car pool if someone needs a ride...

Weekday or weekend doesn't matter, but I DO NOT camp, so it would be nice if someone picked a nice hotel, Turning Stone or where ever, just let me know!!!!!

Just to clarify, Albany is not really "Upstate" although any one in NYC considers anywhere outside the city upstate. Upstate is really Syracuse, Rochester area and Western NY is Buffalo

    (edited important typo!!!!)

Geeze Deborah, I thought "upstate" was anyplace north of Dutchess County. IOW, out of range to commute to NYC. (I'm so confused.)

I won't need a hotel as I'm near enough to drive there and back easily.

Okay, so we've got Thatcher State Park, and so far no one cares what day of the week, and we're going to have a cookout and Adam will bring libations. Early August sounds good to me.

Hopefully Herb and TJ will chime in soon so we'll have more of an idea about preferences.

Anybody from downstate interested? How about western MA and VT?

"Upstate" is relative, I guess. I grew up on the NY/NJ border & could see the Manhattan skyline from my town. Still, the NYC newspapers always called us "upstate." I can't get too much more "upstate" now without finding myself in Quebec.

Ok, so not everyone camps. There are lots of motels around.
