My wife has beensick for the past year with a lung problem which they have not been able to identify.

This past Tuesday night I had to call 911 because she couldn't breath. At the hospital, 4 doctors told me that her vital signs were such that she most probably wasn't going to survive. I've been spending virtually all my time with her since Tuesday night in the ICU. Miraculously(?), she has improved dramatically in the last 24 hours, but I hope it isn't akin to a candle burning more brightly just before it goes out.

This morning a neurosurgeon told me that he had read her chart Wednesday afternoon preparing to see her on Thursday morning and that he had expected to find out that she had died the previous night. Another doctor told me that in all his years of practice, he had never seen or ever read of someone with such poor vital signs surviving. They have my wife in an induced coma and on a breathing machine.

All the doctors, specialists and nurses have told me that they are certain that if she survives she will have brain damage from lack of oxygen and that the lack of oxygen had probably also induced a silent heart attack.

Within the next day or so, they're going to see if she can breath on her own by disconnecting her from the breathing machine. If she's able to breath on her own, they say the best that can be expected is that she will have signs of having had a stroke. If she can't breath on her own, I'll have to give them permission to take her off the breathing machine so she can die.

A third possible occurance is that she can breathe on her own, but can not take deep enough breaths to expel the carbon dioxcide. In that case, she'll need to be on a breathing machine for the rest of her life which is something I know that she does not want. She will probably ask me to give them permission to disconnet the breathing machine to allow her to die.

I'm not a religious person, but I'm asking everyone if they could just say a prayer for her or do whatever you think would be helpful to help her.

We've been married for 37 years now and I love her very much. I can't bear to see her leave in this way.

Thanks in advance for your thoughfulness and prayers.

    Bob

May the Great Mother hold you and those you love in the circle of Her arms and show you both kindness and gentleness.

And, should your dear wife have already learned the lessons of this incarnation and now need to passover, may your spirits be forever entwined with love.

Oh Bob this brought tears to my eyes. I feel so bad for you and all you are going through. Sounds like she is probably at peace and not suffering but you are. Try to think of the good times and it sounds like you are lucky to have had her this long. Sometimes miracles do happen, so don't give up. I will pray that you find your own inner peace however this ends up.

    Bob,

You and your wife are in our prayers.

My wife and I can relate to your situation since caring for her parents for nine years after they both had strokes and other complications. The doctors gave them two years at best. We refused to accept that and fought the system and gave them seven extra years. Your wife can do it, too.

    Bob,

You and your wife will be in my prayers.

I've been a strong supporter of quality vs. quantity of life and hopefully what happens or what you / your wife decide(s) allows for the best and painless result(s) for your wife.

May God bless you with the strength and love at this extremely difficult time.

    Bob -

My sincerest thoughts are with you and yours.

I'd like to share something here that helps me regularly through difficult times - it's not a solution I know, but a bit of perspective for all of us during tough times.

I asked for Strength, and God gave me difficulties to make me strong.

I asked for Wisdom, and God gave me Problems to solve.

I asked for Prosperity, and God gave me Brain & Brawn to work.

I asked for Courage, and God gave me Danger to overcome.

I asked for Love, and God gave me Troubled People to help.

I asked for favors, and God gave me opportunities. I received nothing I wanted. I received everything I needed.

    -Author Unknown.

May you have all the strength you need to get through this difficult time.

Bob, I don't know what I would do in your situation. I can't imagine the difficulty you are going through. I believe God has reasons for everything even if we don't understand them. I know he has a place in heaven for her and that the measurement of a great person is how much they are missed. I'm praying for her recovery and send a prayer to help you with this as well.

    Bob,

Miracles do happen and I hope one comes your way.

My Dad's sister (age 57) was flown in here from a small town on June 1 with a cerebral bleed. Her chances were almost zero. She was in a coma for two weeks before the operated and said she would probably have some major deficit. Surgery too twice as long as expected and they said they had never seen such a mess. She had two small strokes after the surgery and we received more warnings of the handicaps she would probably encounter.

Three weeks ago she left the ICU for a rehab center and although she has some short term memory problems she is not paralyzed and is functioning very well.

I never really believed in miracles until then. I tell this story to hopefully encourage you to believe they can happen to your wife. Hang in there. We are all praying for your wife.

Bob, please take care of yourself, too!

I hope you can manage to get something like enough food, liquids, and especially sleep. All those are easy to ignore in times like this.

When people get sick -- or exhausted -- they make bad choices sometimes.

Your wife needs you to be clear-headed when she may not be. To help her make the difficult choices she may now face.

I wish both of you all the best in this most difficult of times.
