Copyscape - an effective anti-copy tool?
I ran across something called Copyscape http://www.copyscape.com/

Think this would be an effective anti-copy tool?

I've used it several times in the past and found my tutorials on other sites. A few emails to hosts and they disappear rather quickly.

Yes. The site is helpful. I just found someone who copied about 90% of my site.

I'm pretty sure I had a duplicate content penalty applied in Google to the site in question, and started looking around because I figured the site had been copied.

It's a good tool, I've been using it for some time. I've found other websites that copied pages of one of my sites word for word more than once. Like someone else said, one email politely requesting removal of the "quotes" or being given full credit for the duplication of content usually does the trick and the copycat changes the wording quickly.

Wow! That's a fantastic tool. Thank you for sharing. I found a site that was using the words from one of my pages to redirect a page of nothing but Google Adsense ads. Reported to Google immediately.

Thanks for the reminder, I used it a while ago and forgot about it. This mornings search even found one of pages being sold on an "essay" site without my knowledge - now that really is taking the piss.

I just started trying the CopySentry feature last week and it sems OK, but limited to 100 pages.

However, someone at WMW pointed out that you can use Google Alerts - http://www.google.com/alerts - and use it to look out for telltale text from your page.

I just fired off an email to the offending site, as well as to their hosting provider and domain registrar. I hope they are smart enough to take the site down. Otherwise I'll need to find a lawyer to review everything and send a cease and desist. Anyone have any advice on how to go about choosing a lawyer?

I also post their logo (per their terms - which are nice and easy) and have found it cuts copies by about half. Less is more better.

I think if you sign up for Copyscape's paid version, you get that logo that says your site is Copyscape protected to actually put on your site.

Thanks. I found site copiers who blatently copied text off one of my sites and put it on their site on a page meant for google ads. I also signed up with Copyscape. It is a useful tool to catch site copiers so we can deal with them accordingly.

Caught someone today. It deeply saddened me to learn the perp is a person I met at ABW and shared information with via PMs and then emails. I even tried to help him. And he just turned around and ripped me off. Makes me sick.

I just got two DMCAs processed by Google in a record 8 days for me, so they're nicely out of the index.

DMCA complaints to hosts can take ages, even if they are acted upon at all. However, free hosts (Lycos, Yahoo etc) are usually very quick to remove the information.

Anyone had any luck with DMCA complaints to other search engines?
