AB, and a few other members asked about using larger avatars, I'm personally against it because I feel it will detract from the content, but knowing some want to post pictures etc, I have set the profile picture to 500X500 so you can post a large picture of yourself, cat, dog or whatever, but I don't want the forum to look like a picture circus gallery with large and/or overly animated avatars, but that doesn't mean that we all can't vote on it, so let's see what the people say ...

I voted 64x64 so that we could actually see what the images are.

Haiko - if its gonna be the smaller size - than many of the other ones need to be resized as some have larger - like cditty's is 65X65 currently. (I only picked on his cuz I see it in this thread - nothing against his avatar or him ). Gordon also has a larger one and a few others I've noticed along the way.

I'm with CDitty. I think 64x64 would provide more detail, without being so big as to overwhelm things. I can't tell what some of the more detailed avatars are supposed to be at 32x32...

I've seen forums with the "graphics circus" going on with the avatars and sigs, and I agree they are awful looking! But I think the 64x64 size won't cause that effect. Those mega-pic forums (the ones I see are usually game forums) go WAY beyond that, if not with the avatars, then with their multiple-bannered sigs.

Just don't allow the graphics in the sigs and it won't get overwhelming. Little images like for firefox or the like would be ok, just not huge graphic sigs.

Well, since I am older and even with glasses, my eyes are fading, I have to say the 64x64 makes it just a tad bit easier for me to appreciate what the folks meant with their avatar.

    I don't want a picture circus, either!

The smaller, the better. I've seen too many boards for kids with bigger avatars and I don't like it, too distracting and not professional.
Think about the speed of this board, too. Save your bandwidth.

One good thing with the VBulletin, if you don't want to see the avatars, then go to your control panel and turn them off. That way, no matter how big the avatars are, you will never see them.

Haiko... I think I'm experincing "avatar envy"...

mousejockey and gordon have bigger avatars than mine...
Iím starting to feel girly again...lol

    I think 64 x 64 would be a good compromise...

    kindaí like baby bearís porridge...
not to hot,,, not to cold... but, just right...
especially if you keep the animation to a minimum...

    Once this poll is complete...
will all avatars be changed to the agreed upon standard...?
If not... please make mine a big mac...

I voted 80x80 earlier, simply because that's the size of my current avatar I use at a lot of places. But it's a legit size, most places offer larger.

With the postbit being at the top, it can intrude a bit more when scrolling down reading posts, with the postbit on the left it can be a lot less intrusive because you can read straight down across posts with non-important stuff being set off to the left.

I allow 120x80 on one of my forums (odd size, because it's auto-related, the avatars will be generally wider to accomodate the auto). The postbit column is set wider than that anyway (example) so as to it's not noticeable, even on a forum set to 740 pixels wide.

It all just depends on how a forum is set up. phpBB doesn't have a top-side option, so it's less of a deal there, but I still think 64x64 or even 80x80 is a common standard among many forums. I've yet to ever choose an avatar for ABW, so I guess it hasn't ever mattered much to me, here.

Well, I voted for 32x32, I dont want to do any extra scrolling because of big avatars.... but to be honest, comparing Chris or Gordon's avatar and header with the others, they don't take any more room, so I'm hereby changing my vote to 64x64!!

Still a tie between the 32X32 and 64X64 sizes - this shows me that there is more of a demand for the larger avatars than I originally thought and as such, maybe we should give it a try. I'll look around for a hack that ensures the max size is 64X64 and shrinks it if needed.

Probably a good decision since the scroll is the same for a 64x64 and a 32x32.

Then, the avatars will look like the users originally designed them to look and everyone will be all happy. Some people put a lot of work into their avatars.

Any idea when a final decsion might be made on the size? I need to resize mine again and reupload it. Since the old board is down and it was uploaded there I can't grab the URL for it. I'm feeling a bit nekkid without it.

    Kellie,

I think we'll try the max size of 64X64 which means users can use smaller if they want to .... btw your old one can be downloaded and then uploaded to this board from Here

Thanks Haiko. Just to be clear. If it's smaller than the 64x64, VB won't automatically resize it to the 64x64? Poop automatically resized smaller up to the 32x32 which made me bloated.

No, the hack I'll get made will specifically not upsize, only downsize to 64X64, if it's larger than 64X64.

64x64 like cditty as the maximum, looks good. At least there is an option to go smaller later too.
