    Counter Question
Does anyone know of a good counter for stats on my sites?
I just found out that the one I am using STATCOUNTER.com
may be considered spyware by some SE's and they don't show ALL SE traffic -- which does me no good

    Any suggestions?

    Hello SuZe,

sitemeter.com Been using them for years.

One of the best, generic once. They also have an invisible version for few dollars per month or by the year.

    Hi, SuZe,

Personally, I do not think it is generally a good idea to advertise
to the world the number of visitors to your site. You don't go
around telling the world how much money you have, do you?

    Just my personal opinion.

I agree with RadarCat. It's a really bad idea to indicate your traffic to your visitors. I use awstats and Urchin and they're great. They give me everything I need to know. Lately I've been building my own stats for much more specific information like what links are getting clicks and where people are clicking to.

I use awstats for all my sites & also have written my own "radar screen" page that looks at the awstats files and gives me a quick one page snapshot of how all the sites are doing at that moment (updated every half-hour). It ranks the sites in terms of traffic, shows predicted traffic, predicted vs. average, last robot hits, which search engines are sending traffic, etc...very handy.

statcounter provides an invisible version. I've compared the results with another service and don't see much difference in hits reported.

    Thanks Guys-
I like the invisible counters no one sees my traffic

HERB - There is something going on with Statcounter
They don't report Google traffic and there are messages on their forum about statcounter showing up as spyware with some of the new spyware-software for some reason. So I just wanted another option.

    Hi, Infospongellc,

This sounds very cool and very useful.

Are you in a situation where you could share
some details with us, such as languages, scripts
and software used as well as URLs to go to for
    information and downloads?

    Thanks,

It's in PHP. If I get some time I'll clean it up a little and post it someplace.

    Hi, Infospongellc,

It occurs to me that as capable as your code
sounds to be that perhaps you may wish to consider
polishing your code and turning it into shareware
    and then into commercial software.

Maybe get some money into the bank for your old age. . .

    Just a thought !!

    Hey RadarCat,

My software falls into 3 categories:

    1. code that people pay me money to write (i.e. the day job)
    2. code that I write for my own proprietary use
    3. code that I give away / open source

This would fall into category 3. I don't think the shareware route is worth it because people will generally just take your stuff and not pay for it.

It's neat seeing your os2warplinks site. I worked for an ISV that produced one of the first heavy-duty OS/2 2.0 software packages. I still have nightmares about installing the various 2.0 beta drops over and over that IBM would send our way.

Open source is a good way to go. You can build a website around it and create a developer community. Lots to do with a community like that.
