    Free Credit Report - Really
Just saw this on the news, for those that are making some money at this, might take a little dip. Basically the 3 major reporting firms are going to be required to give people a free credit report once every 12 months.

Yes, it's true. I got a free report from one of them in January. I figure I'll get one every 4 months or so, and I can see if there's anything going on I should know about.

I know that for at least the past two years both Equifax and TransUnion have offered FREE credit reports by mail. They also offer the ption of viewing your report online instantly, but you have to pay for this service - at least, the last tiem I checked. I always seem to get suckered into buying it...too impatient to wait for its arrival by mail

I believe this site is operated by the "big 3": www.annualcreditreport.com

They are legally required to give you the info free annually.

So long as you turn down the usual special offers, the reports are actually free.

It's more important than ever to check out your personal info that's at these sites. Check out the stories about choicepoint , if that doesn't bug the heck out of you, it should.

Thanks for the link to the free annual report site. I just pulled up my report (and for the fun of it decided to pay to see my FICO score, too).

Was very surprised - pleasantly, as it turned out - about what I found.

Apparently, living with out credit cards, taking out no loans and keeping a "low profile" do pay dividends with a FICO score and keep the number of credit inquiries on your account very low indeed.

Still, have no plans to put the FICO score to use - I don't like debt.

    *Old thread bump*

Just bumped it in case you haven't taken advantage of it.

    https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

My year is up so I can check them again for free. I had some mistakes there last year, hopefully it got corrected.

uh huh. not mine . . . all three were unable to "give mine over the internet." I don't exist?

but then I don't have a credit account anywhere, pay cash where possible anyway, and never apply for store credit cards.

but I would like to see what detrita my name has picked up over the years.

I used to work for one of the credit reporting firms (sorry cant disclose the name). My advice to everybody out there is to take a close look at your reports. Someone else's credit record could figure in yours (possibly due to mistaken identity- similar names etc) If you report it they will rectify it and you will again get a free copy of the credit report.

I always seem to have trouble with the Equifax one where I have to call in and they mail it to me. The other two work fine but I have one error I'm trying to get off the reports.

Got my experian quick and easy...it's amazing the things that get in there, like the notation that my address is a wholesale business address, not a residence! What the heck?

    hey! A Vegas company

Forget them! I got a letter from the Veterans Administarion telling me ALL their info on all people in the service since 1972 - and their spouses - was taken home by an employee, who was robbed.

Let's see... everyone who's ever been in the service in the last 30 years, plus their families... that's probably one out of three Americans!
