    As an affiliate:

    1. Do you have ads on your homepage?
    SURE - Text ads

    2. Why or why not.
    Search engines read them.

    As an merchant:

    1. We do offer 5 banners.

    2. Why or why not.
There is a perception in the affiliate community that a merchant without banners is a lesser form of life.

    >>1. Do you have ads on your homepage?

On most sites I have at least one banner, and some have a banner and a little box on the side. On a couple I just have my logo.

    >>2. Why or why not.

So they look like "real" sites, that is, sites "big" enough for someone to want to advertise on them.

But most of my viewers don't come in the front page of my sites anyway. Usually they come in on specific pages and never see the general front page...

    That is a good reason.

That is how my site will be also as my front page is pretty general and my 2nd level pages will have specific content keywords.

Yes I have ads. Most if not all top sites have ads on their sites. I agree with Leader. It makes them more real/commercial to the average person. If properly done, you can have as many ads as you want on your site. Just look at any magazine on the rack.

Are y'all talking about advertising we sell to people and run their banners, or affiliate banners on the homepage?

Different sites have different approaches. My more "professional" looking sites have a minimal amount of advertising on the home page (and minimal on the other pages as well). But some of my sites are much more heavy with ads and they are effective for what they do.

When done right a few banner adds on your home page can look nice(but dont go overboard)...and if you generate a lot of traffic you can even charge you merchants for that premium placement.
