    Referrer Question
I have a webalizer referrer question.

I am having a bunch of odd urls show up in the Top 20 Total Referrer section of my webalizer stats.

When I go to the urls in question, I can't find a link to my site on the page or hidden within the source code anywhere.

Does anyone have any idea how these referrers are showing up in my stats?

I don't know but I've also seen many of these, I am wondering if the sites in question are using some kind of spider or bots? I have had many hits on my sites from these bloody bots or whatever they are

    A question for all.
is there any way to have a directory on my server that the only way anyone can get into it is from a link on my site? maybe something in the .htaccess or something? (maybe I should post this eslewhere)

I've been getting a lot of referrer spam like that lately. Somebody pays to have a robot whack your site with a fake referrer header over and over so something like "buy windows xp cheep dot com" comes up in your server logs and you go visit and say, "well, gosh, I think I'll buy something!". yeah, right.

If you have a site that smells at all like a blog you're more likely to be hit by this it seems, but not always.

I've traced a few of these back to their source and had their ISP terminate them.

One of them is buy office xp best xp software .. biz.

Another one that shows up heavily is a porn site about inserting bizarre objects in certian areas.

Tim - How did you trace the ones you mentioned back to the source if you don't mind my asking?

Definitely referrer spam. I see a lot of it too.

Go back to your server logs & see the IP address they came from.

Run a whois on the IP address & you'll see at some point in the chain of address ranges and will be contact information for the ISP. You may get lucky and see the contact info for the actual spammer, but that's probably a waste of your time.

I'd post an actual example, but it's probably against some rule. :-) If you want, you can PM me the ip address from your log and I'll be glad to run it for you.

One of the guys I was getting stuff from was a company located in Israel running thru a Dutch ISP. The ISP didn't care or didn't understand. If it's domestic you may have better luck.

Depending on how annoying this is, you can also ban the IP address from your server. I had one numbskull who was just flooding me with traffic & had to do that.

BTW, I'm guessing one of the reasons behind this is that some web site software (nukes and blogs usually) automatically display the top referrers and these guys are trying to appear on that list to jack up the page rank for the client and pull in more traffic. Losers. :-)

info is partially right. Go to your server logs (the raw data) and find the exact url. webalizer truncates the url when it has a ?. Once you have the full url then you can see where the traffic actually comes from, you'll probably find its from a message board or something. Of course, if it is a message board you might not have access the the actual page without logging in.

The ones I've seen don't come from a message board. It's pretty easy to write a PHP or Perl script to blast a webserver with a fake referral field & that's what I've been getting hit with.
