Major Traffic Drop - what can I do?!?!
    Hi,

For a long period, I'm having a major decrease in traffic,
I have several websites, and for example,
in website #1 I had on:

    july 2003 - 5,000 entries
    aug 2003 - 3,000 entries
    sep 2003 - 2,000 entries
    oct 2003 - may 2004 - 1600 entries
    june 2004 - july 2004 - 2600 entries
    aug 2004 - 1400 entries
    sep 2004 - 250 entries (I think I had a server downtime here)
    oct 2004 - 700 entries
    nov 2004 - 1000 entries
    dec 2004 - 2000 entries (christmas)
    jan 2005 - 1100 entries
    feb 2005 - 800 entries!!!

I believe that the first drop from 5,000 to a steady 1600 entries / month
was because of the google algo change, and now the drop after august 2004 is beacuse the changes in Yahoo and MSN.....!

I had most of my traffic based on the free major SE's, and now I'm barely getting any traffic like I used to, and barely earning commissions like I used to!!!

on another site, I had 9,000 entries in July 03, and now in feb 2005 only 1,400!!!

What can I do? What's the direction? how can I turn the wheel of traffic back??

Don't rely on free traffic from the SE's, learn from this.

Are you wondering just how to get traffic back from the SE's or traffic period?

Overall to make money I guess I need traffic period, though It's still hard for me to digest the loss of all the free traffic - I mean look at the numbers - it was huge in comparison to these days , is it unreversable for good?

can you give me some info on both ?

    thanks!

Algos shift, more competition comes online everyday so you might be getting great traffic one day and overnite can lose it all so it's best not to become dependent on it.

For free traffic if you SEO'd it right, you can work on getting links in or some people rework their pages or just hold tight and see if the SE's come back around. You can start building new pages/sites and see if something catches.

For traffic other than free you can:
Learn how to do PPC. It's a good skill to have and once you learn how to make money with it, it's nice to know if you lose free SE traffic, you can still make money. And if you do both well, that's great.

There's an effective advertising forum here you might want to look at if you're into offline advertising or other forms of getting traffic that's not normally talked about. Most forget that there are other ways to get traffic beside free SE traffic and PPC.

    Try WmW
    TrustNo1 said it all.

There are other SE related fora to take this prollllem to.
I'm told that "The World of Search" conference will be in New Orlean in late June.

There are ups & downs & we all deal with it.
