Why Are Porn Sites Giving Me Links?
About a week ago I started noticing that porn sites were showing up in my stats page as having given me links. My sites don't have anything whatsoever to do with porn, so naturally I clicked on one to check it out. The page that was supposed to be referring someone to my site was little more than some pictures, and absolutely no outside links at all. When I saw this happen a few times, I thought maybe it was another way for porn sites to spam - instead of spamming your mailbox, they'd spam webmasters' stat pages. Ok, I thought, that might be clever. But I've caught on. Now, however, I seem to be getting a lot of these referring porn pages in my stat pages from different sites (though I realize it could be the same person). It makes me think something more sinister may be happening, but I don't know what.

Anyone have any clues as to what this might be about?

I have the same links to some of my sites. Someone recently explained its just another ploy to get people to their websites. People meaning the webmasters checking their refferer logs.

This is called "referral log spam"

Some stats programs generate spiderable pages that sometimes garner some PR/linkpop, with links back to referrng sites. These links only have incremental value, but if somebody can pull off a few hundred or a few thousand of these links, they may benefit from it to some degree.

Most of the ones I get are for sites trying to sell cut-rate windows XP software. :-)

The most referral spam I get comes from a place trying to sell a software made to do...

    Thumbs down
I agree that this is most likely referral log spam, but I've also found they are buying up small family-oriented sites or expired domains as well. I did a lot of link exchanges with some really nice mom & pop type sites. While checking links I found several that redirected to porn sites.

I rarely delve that deeply into my logs these days, but I have seen this happen on shared hosting where the server screws up and starts serving the wrong pages. I nailed it once with a combination of the Google Cache and the referrer links, and what *had* been a porn site accidentally turned into a different site for a bit. Very odd. Pretty rare too, I guess.

Some.. a few.. sites publish their referrer logs. So, it's quiet possible that these are speculative referrals fishing for that.

    Or maybe a browser bug?

A lot of nukes and blogs have an auto-updating block that shows the last few referalls, so if these guys hit one of those they snarf some free advertising and maybe some page rank? Other than that, they get webmasters wondering about their site.

I just followed up on one I hadn't seen before and it was from an affiliate program offering to pay me $40 for linking to them. Ugh.

We often get links from porn or "semi-porn" sites (is that a real term?) for certain news stories.

For example, we got links from several adult sites for this story:

    Teen Sends Student Semen-Frosted Brownies

Same thing with police stories about arrests for hidden cameras and sex crimes.

I blogged about that Koko the Gorilla lawsuit and a "sex search engine" started spidering me LOL! Finally it stopped, guess their visitors were disappointed...

I've been getting occaissional referral links from Japanese adult sites. It really bugs me as my site is an OS/2 Warp operating system web site.

Does anybody know how I can get rid of these morons other than manually putting each one in my Apache IP Deny Manager?
