any time you move a site the search engines have to find you all over again. if you can keep your original host deal for a little while you can put pages there (using the same page names as before) explaining the visitor should follow the link there to the new pages. you can also use a redirect command on the old site to transfer the visitor over after a set time, usually just enough seconds for them to understand what is happening.

I don't believe the search engines have to find you again. I just move 3 sites and saw no difference in the amounts of crawls or traffic. If you put your new site up and still have your old site with a link to your new you'll probably set off a duplicate filter on Google and it will hurt you.

I would get your new account set up and your site ready to be online before you close your original host account. Then switch your DNS while both hosts are up and in a day or so close down your original account. That way the transition is smooth and people won't get a page not found because the Domain Name hasn't propogated yet.

That's been my experience with switching hosts.

If your switching domain names and hosts then its a different story.

If your domain remains the same and the page structure remains the same you can be hosted by tom dick or harry and move 5 times a month. It won't affect anything.

I disagree. In fact, if you have duplicate content live in two places, you may risk more serious consequences from some SE's.

If your domain is changing, or if for some strange reason you use an IP instead of a domain - then you might have some issues.

    IMHO--

I don't propose duplicate content. I say convert the original pages to a little copy mentioning the redirect to the new site. Supposedly the SEs will learn from that, but my own experience makes me doubt it.

Best way is to add the new DNS entries for the new site as 3rd and 4th entries. Then after propagation remove the 1st and 2nd entries so that there isn't any questionable activity. Using this method I have NEVER seen any change in ranking.

Since Febuary I have moved to 4 different servers. My sites large and a resource hog and each server upgrade was never enough I went from a Single CPU P4 server with 1GB of ram to a Dual XEON server with 2GB of ram between the Single P4 and the Dual Xeon there was 3 servers and if anything traffic has increased.

SEs search on URL, not the IP address, so if you change the IP address of the server they'll continue as normal. (Unless that IP is blacklisted, which is very rare).

Because of the relatively slow rate of change in DNS propagation though, it will take some days for the IP address change to come through to every single visitor, including search engine crawlers. For this reason, you shouldn't be too hasty shutting down the old site - give it several days for a smooth transfer.

But, sites changing hosts or IP addresses is the sort of thing that happens all the time. I've never seen a problem when I've moved hosts at all.

and its going to take 24hours to get me on the new one...

I know which ones are right

You'll probably be okay, even if you don't have a smooth transition.

when I had to move a site I had no control over specifying DNS and the url completely changed. was a move from a compuserve homepage to a regular dot-com url.

it hurt, too, because I was getting nice google adsense checks until they cut me off because of the compuserve address. fortunately I had already registered the new domain name, but it took forever to get traffic back up to even the halfway point of before.

I like the sound of Haiko's switchover plan. Will definitely keep that in my bag of tricks.
