In the goood ol days, a pertson could simply edit a post from goood to good or, perhaps, pertson to person without a problem.
It is now a problem because the old and the new both show up.
what is the point of editing if the old copy still remains? Obviously, the author wishes to change something written....
Seems to be an oversight to me...

You're probably hitting the 'reply with quote' icon rather than the 'edit/remove' one.
Did the self same thing myself last Monday

click the icon at the bottom right of your post and you can edit it (some forums allow longer editing times than others most are 30 mins).
