Question Discontinue a PR 5 site?
I have a PR 5 site that gets some traffic (250 visits per day) that does not make money, not even enough to pay hosting. It did make some money before google did its magic on it December.

It's a psuedo-content site. I feature art contests for kids and I am fairly certain that mostly kids visit it since traffic matches school days. (Not so much teens, but mostly 8-14 yr old) It is in DMOZ so I just can't convert it into a big shopping mall. Well I suppose I could if I notified DMOZ and told them to delist it but then my PR would probably go down a notch or 2.

Nothing I have tried seems to work. I would love to discontinue this site, but I am wondering how this will affect my other site rankings since I throw links the way of a few other sites I have.

About the only real positive of this site is that I have a page set up educating young people on the dangers of emailing or corresponding with strangers on the web - it lists the horrific consequences in a way suitable for young viewers. I insist on parents sending artwork in - this probably cuts down on the site popularity but that's how it's going to be.

I understand that a number of people are willing to pay for links on a PR5 site. That could, at least, pay the hosting until you figure out what you want to do with it.

I wouldn't drop the site or do anything about getting it removed from DMOZ. Simply add to it and try to follow these kids as they age. Add features for them to use as they get older and provide tools that can provide stickiness. I also have a site that caters to a young audience and while it doesn't make a whole lot of money it's still my most valuable site due to it's age and traffic volume. I'm adding features to it constantly to keep these visitors coming back for years to come.

I'm curious why you say it doesn't pay for hosting. Just about any site can pay for hosting if it gets visitors. Are you hosting it on a dedicated server? If so, are you sharing the server with other sites? Those other sites should pay for the hosting. Maybe you can try Fastclick?

You might want to try to add some sales pages. Maybe target the kids' parents and do a little adwords to bring visitors to those pages. Maybe your existing PR will even help get you some free traffic to those pages. There are lots of neat merchants that offer services and products for children.

Or sell it. With that PR and number of visitors, you should be able to get a fair price for it. Maybe someone else could do better with it.

Yep - what everybody else said.

"You might want to try to add some sales pages." - Yes, if your current audience is mostly kids you won't sell much of anything. Add a few subdirectory "shops" for various merchants. S&S is a good source for kids' art supplies, and the type of stuff they sell attracts volume buyers (teachers, day-care centers, etc). These would not necessarily have to be flawlessly integrated with the current site; they could be treated as separate "subsites" with just a text link from existing pages. Most traffic would come in direct to your sales pages from searches for specific items, so the "kids only" issue would not be a factor.

"DMOZ-included/PR 5" - that alone is worth more than the cost of hosting and domain renewals.

Any chance of creating a sister site that focusses on the next age up? Maybe you could feed the 1st group over to the 2nd as they grow. Eventually, they'll get those shiny new credit cards...

I think I have the sister site. It's oriented towards kids songs and lullabies. It gets 2000-3000 unique a day, and it does pay its costs because I'm hosting with a reseller account that I use for my other "paying" sites.

My site isn't purely kids oriented - there are a lot of young parents there too. I tried most of the baby programs, mom programs, etc - all made barely pennies. I now scattered some amazon links with kids DVD's and pop-up books (parents like to buy them for kids) and it's definately paying its way. Since I use the same amazon ID as I use for a couple other of my sites, I'm not sure exactly how much traffic it is sending, but I think it is responsible for most of the:
    - Kitchen appliances
    - Educational Books
    - Religious Books
    and
    - DVDs (not just kids)
that I sell via Amazon (not directly links from my site, but impulse buys once they get there.

Another thing you could try, depending on what rules you have in place about ownership of the kids pictures (hey, their parents are probably the ones who did all the scanning and uploading for them, so they should be able to read any submission guidelines) is to offer the best designs on T-Shirts via Cafe Press. At 3-5 bucks profit per shirt (you decide on the mark-up) and a bunch of proud parents buying their kids masterpieces, you could probaly cover the bills pretty well.

If you do decide to try the Cafe Press thing and don't already have an account, PM me - I'd appreciate the 2nd level affiliation, and we can swap ideas for kids site monetization.

I think that answers my question. I will probably change the format somewhat - I'll think of something.

This is pure genius and something I have done in the past with photo contests for pet people. I have been encouraging other sites to do it, but think I will revamp the idea for myself again

I had another thought on this topic as well.

Please DON'T let the domain fall out of registration, even if you decide to stop hosting the site. If you let it expire, chances are good that some porno spammer will grab it and populate it with very non-kid-safe content. I've seen this happen to so many childrens and family sites (including my own sister's horse-farm site), and it's just attrocious that kids and families with the page bookmarked suddenly see all this porn stuff 'cuz some scummy porn-lord grabbed the domain when it expired.
Plesae kick in the extr $8 or so for a year or two even if you kill the site just to protect the people who used to visit it.

Good point! There are a bunch of links to this site on family-orientated sites that I know of. At a minimum, I will reregister the domain.
