Talking I know everyone here hates full-time j*bs,
but wanted to blow my own horn and share that I've been promoted from Executive Editor to General Manager at phillyBurbs.com. My boss, the CEO & I have discussed how this position will progress, expand and develop over the next 24 months and I'm looking forward to it. Exciting times in the philly 'Burbs!

Congrats Karl! A toast to you, from one full-timer to another... and I hope we'll still be working together, even after your promotion?

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Amanda - yep, I'll be retaining the lead position on our business development efforts, including affiliate marketing, even though I've slowly handed off a lot of the day-to-day type AM duties to members of my staff.

There is only one kind of j*b (geesh, don't the patrol profanity around here?) worth having. At the end of the day, when you ask yourself, "You mean they let me do this all day long AND they pay me?", then you have a real job. If you can have a real job and do affiliate marketing, then life is truly grand!

Congrats, maybe by then you'll be where we are!

I'm sure you're excited and it's good that they recognize skill when they see it! But...really, why w*rk up the ladder when you can own the whole ladder!

Nice work Karl. Though I have to say, Executive Editor sounds better than General Manager. You sure that was a promotion?

    Congrats Karl!

By the way, we don't hate it when other people have jobs.

We need people with jobs to buy the stuff we sell anyway. We need people with jobs in the companies we promote, to make sure we get our checks for selling the stuff and the stuff is delivered etc..

Also, if everyone were doing AM, who would we have left to sell to?

You may not... Personally I'm chilled by the thought of people actually *wanting* those things!

    *shudder* *shudder* *shudder* *trauma*

There's no need for everyone to do AM. There's lots of other non-j*b, entrepreneurial ways to make money (that don't compete with AM or diminish a person's chance of buying from an affiliate).

But don't forget...Karl IS doing AM...

You know, our CEO had a series of 1-on-1 sitdowns with everyone in the "corporate" wing of the company, where we reside. I had mine last week.

He said that while he couldn't use a lot of generalizations with my group (not surprising giving their eclectic make up), he said there's one thing he could say definitively, they all love what they do. That reinforces what they've told me individually. Combined with the promotion and accompanying raise, I feel confident that the folks above me and below me are happy. That's a delicate balancing act I've always worked toward and I'm thrilled that I've been able to pull it off. It's an ongoing process, of course, but very satisfying.
BTW, I'll be expanding my staff at the end of the year, so if anyone's interested in w*rking near Philly, let me know!

I thought you had the online department--you never told me the Burbs had an acting division!

I feel confident that the folks above me and below me are happy.
I refrained from asking before, but now I've got to. What happened to the OLD general manager? If everyone's happy, that tells me that s/he either 1) Left the company, or 2) Got promoted. If it's not 1 or 2 then the happiness is probably not quite so unanimous...

I've never understood corporate managerial job titles, maybe one day you will be able to invent your own - I suggest:

No stars, but more $$$'s in their checks!

(But I suppose there's some company, somewhere, that gives stars too!)

I've proposed that idea before. My initial suggestion - Omnipotent Pooh-bah

I refrained from asking before, but now I've got to. What happened to the OLD general manager? If everyone's happy, that tells me that s/he either 1) Left the company, or 2) Got promoted. If it's not 1 or 2 then the happiness is probably not quite so unanimous...
Oh Leader, you are truly the yin to my yang.

This is a new position. Wait, since you asked, let me back up and explain in a little more detail...

My boss is the Director of Interactive Media for our company. The CEO has basically put him in charge of new business development for the company, where he'll act as a resource for our properties as they put together new initiatives. He will be spearheading a rather large initiative out of our home office by year's end as well. In addition, my boss gained approval for a rather extensive expansion at phillyBurbs; we've added three sales & sales support folks over the last few months and a few more are on the to-do list as well.

Combine the new responsibilities and our expansion here and you have too much for one person to handle. That's where I come in. I'll be adding another editor to my staff by year's end to pick up new work created by our online initiatives and to free me up to handle other duties.

So no one left or got fired. It's just a part of the growth we've been experiencing over the past three years.

    Sorry to disappoint you. :P
