There are quite a few free forum scripts including

PHPBB which is very capable with most of the options that anyone could ask for but it is a huge chunk of code and apparently resource hungry. http://www.phpbb.com/
I am using it on one of my sites but it sees very little traffic so I haven't noticed any problems with it.

SimpleMachines Forum is not quite so feature rich but looks good and might be just what you're looking for.

Invision Power Board - the latest release in not free but older versions are still out there for download if you can find it. If your host offers CPanel with Fantastico then you probably have the option to auto-install the older version.

There are a bunch more freebies out there but I haven't checked 'em out so can't offer recommendation.

    megabbs asp bulletin board
Try this bulletin board at www.pd9soft.com. Tons of features and easy to install. It's free if you keep their link on it and still pretty cheap if you want the registered version.

which ever one is picked... dont forget most shared hosting accounts dont have the resources needed to run a forum... because of bandwith issues
