    Question Table Tag Not Closing Off
    Hi Guys,

    Sent a few emails about this to you via email but as yet haven't received a reply?

    Anyway, has there been any patches or updates that fixes the WM-RECORD tag for tables. I am still getting some tables created without the closing </tr></table>, which really screws up the table formatting.

    As this is only happens with some tables and not all I can't add the extra tags, as the tables that are created correctly are screwed up when the extra tags are included to compensate for the missing ones. ~sigh~

    I am currently using WM V2.4.

    Thanx

    Les

    All email support requests recieved here have been attended to. I apologize that your email didn't come through. We've had to implement some very aggressive spam filters.

    Please re-send to webmerge@fourthworld.NET and include your settings file, templates, and a >2mb section of your source.

    All instances in which this was reproducible here have been addressed in that release. There may be other combinations of tags and settings which may give rise to it, and I'll happily issue a patch ASAP once I recieve your files which will make it possible for me to identify the source of this issue.

    Thanks in advance for sending those -

    Les It sounds like I had the same problem. After the closing record tag I inserted an invisible table. I'm not sure why but this solved the problem.

    Workarounds are possible, but if there is a problem I'd like to be able to address it. In order to do so I'll need someone who's experiencing the problem to please send me their settings file, templates, and a <2MB portion of the source via email.

    All cases where people did send in the materials needed to allow me to address the problem have found their problem solved. I'd love to be able to help you too.

    Hi FW, Billnj,

    Tried sending the requested files for a few days now but the email keeps bouncing.

    Remote host said: 550 <webmerge@fourthworld.net>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table

    Billnj,

    what is an invisable table? Is this simply the table syntax with empty td cells, eg all <TABLE><TR><TD> </TD></TR></TABLE>

    Curious; I'm not aware of anything on the server which would generate a 550 for you.

    Try sending to webmerge@fourthworld.net

    Sounds like there may be an issue on the sending server. I'm getting lots of email at both fourthworld.com and fourthworld.net (including more than 400 spams today -- I'm so popular! <g>), so I'm pretty confident the addresses are working.

    If there's any info your tech support needs to resolve this feel free to have them give me a call: 800-288-5825.

    I've gotten that error (or one that's very close to it) before, and it's pretty misleading with the error message. What it didn't like, was that the "recipient address" wasn't on my own server--it wasn't that the recipient's address actually had an error. The problem was something to do with how Outlook Express connects to MY server...if I remember right, I had to set it to "require user authentication" (or something to that effect) for outgoing mail, and supply my email password for OE to access the system. Which is not the default for OE.

    Mine wouldn't send any mail to domains outside my own server until I fixed that.

    With shared hosting, the same difficulty is probably just as likely to arise, if the underlying server configuration requires user authentication.

    Hope this will help.

    I've been working with Frank's excellent tutorial, and it seems the only problem may be that he hasn't updated his pages for v2.4 yet.

    There was an issue with closing tables in v2.3, for which a common solution was to include an extra closing </tr> and </table> tag at the end of the tabled area.

    Based on some excellent reports with example files sent in during the v2.4 test cycle, significant changes were made to the way WebMerge generates tables. In all test cases delivered here at the time the table closing issue was resolved.

    Spot-checking here, I find that if I remove the extra </tr> and </table> from Frank's tutorial template (0-CATEGORY-TEMPLATE.html), the generated pages no longer contain them.

    Frank, could I trouble you to verify this?

    I guess I'm missing something here. I ran Frank's sample feed with 4-tier settings files and the table code generated was incomplete.

    Just to be sure try removing everything between the body tags in 0-CATEGORY-TEMPLATE.html...everything except the following...

    [WM-RECORD cols=3 width=800]
    [WM-IndexLabel: SUBCATEGORY]
    [WM-IMAGEPATH: THUMBNAIL_IMAGE]<BR>
    [WM-FIELD: SUBCATEGORY]
    [/WM-IndexLabel]
    [/WM-RECORD]

    ...that leaves you with just the code that produces the table. Here's the complete output for disney.html (between body tags):

    <table width="800">
    <tr>
    <td width="267" valign="top">

    <a href="Einstein.html" ><img src="http://www.funtocollect.net/images/small/ANIMALVIDEO.JPG" border="0" ></a><BR>
    <a href="Einstein.html">Einstein</a>

    </td>

    You'll notice that the table doesn't close with </tr></table>.

    Now if you check Baby-Bedding.html, you'll see the last cell of the row closes fine, but the table ends with this:
    <tr>
    </tr>
    </table>

    So if you put in a template workaround (add the extra </tr></table>) to fix the Disney page, you break the Baby Bedding page.

    I'm using the current version of WebMerge which I bought over the weekend after reading Frank's tutorial.

    hmmm...After removing the extra </table> from 0-SUBCATEGORY-TEMPLATE.html and running FTC-4Tiers 3.4ww I get both disney.html and Baby-Bedding.html generated with correctly balanced table tags.

    Is there something else I should be looking at?

    Sorry, I don't see how you achieved the balanced tables.

    I see the extra </table> tag in the subcategory template, but Disney.html and Baby-Bedding.html are not subcategories. They're main categories created by the 0-CATEGORY-TEMPLATE when FTC-4Tiers 2.4ww is processed...at least in the tutorial files I downloaded last weekend.

    I'll double-check it, but it seems odd that the same template will generate tables both correctly and incorrectly. There must be something else at play here for that to be the case....

    I seem to recall, and please don't hold me to this, that I had a template and feed (used with v2.4) that did not include the final </table> tag IF the number of items in the feed to be used were not divisable by the number of columns. i.e. 3 Columns with 13 items.

    Like I said, don't hold me to that... as I was very tired at the time from trying to build that site, and didn't take the time to jot down any problems as they appeared.

    Thanks for the clarification.

    When I run those files here with v2.4 I get an extra </tr></table> in both Baby_Bedding.html and Disney.html.

    But when I remove those extra closing tags from the template (0-CATEGORY-TEMPLATE.html) both of those pages generate with appropriately matching start and close tags for all elements.

    This result seems consistent with other tests I'd done during the v2.4 development cycle, during which many changes were made to the table generation code.

    Are you sure you're using v2.4? (check the About box)
    If so, we'll need to dig a little deeper to determine the difference between my setup and yours so I can reproduce the result you're getting.

    If you can reproduce that result consistently in v2.4 please send me the files needed for me to get that here (template, settings file, <2mb portion of source).

    With all file sets submitted here for testing during the v2.4 development cycle the program was revised so that they all work well. If you've found an exception to what's already been addressed I'd like to catch that one in the next free updates.

    Thanks in advance -

    Sorry, but I am traveling/working in Kinshasa at the moment and have not be following this forum. I also do not have all the WM files on hand to verify this issue. However, I have NOT had problems with closing tags since upgrading to v2.4.

    I need to update the tutorial. I'll put it on my to-do-sometime list.

    Regards,

    Thanks to Chopper's dilligence we've identified the issue with tables. It seems the closure issue was happening when the number of records on a given index page was less than the number of columns.

    This has been fixed - a test version with this fix has been uploaded for your review:
    http://www.fourthworld.com/products/webmerge/test241/

    The .exe version there is for Windows; the .dmg for OS X.
    This is the application only -- you'll want to copy it to your current WebMerge program folder to run it.

    Please verify the fix and let me know how it works for you.

    Thank you, Chopper, for sending the crystal clear example that helped me find this one.

    Smile Tables Are Now All Fixed! :-)
    Hi Guys,

    Thank you for all your help!

    The test version has fixed all my tables... those with records that exceed the number of columns specified and those that are less than the number of columns.

    Take care

    Les

    All in a day's work here at Fourth World.

    Glad to hear that worked out. Once I get verification on the new WM-If enhancements I'll be able to post v2.4.1 officially.

    Many thanks to all of you who sent in examples files. Any software is only as good as its testers -- thanks for helping to make WebMege an ever-more valuable product.
