I don't know the difference between traditional and contemporary jewelry, especially where wedding jewelry is concerned. Can anyone describe the difference between them? What are people looking for when they search for one or the other?

Traditional vs Contemporary is used more in conjunction with Anniversay gifts than wedding jewelry, Traditional being "based in the past" and Contemporary "Modern"
There's a very good article here on About.com
And for wedding jewelry it's near enough same ;
Traditional Jewelry refers to classic and old styles of jewelry such as plain wedding bands or milgrain wedding bands
Contemporary refers to designs thatl have a newer look/style, nore up to date but not too fancy like engraved bands.
Personally I like the engraved, Etruscan and Celtic wedding band styles myself
