I wouldn't cause any problems if I redirected crawlers (based on a UA check) automatically versus giving non-crawlers (regular visitors) a static page with a notice and a link, would I?
What I'm doing is consolidating a few sites into one. I'd like to check if the UA matches Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc and if it matches then auto 301 them to the new site (or the section of the site that is/was that particular site).
If regular visitors hit the domain, give them a static page that says that particular site is now a part of the new site and offer a link to the new site (or section of the new site that is/was that particular site).
I don't want to just put up a static page with a link because I don't want the crawlers to continue to crawl that domain and follow just a link to the new site (or section). I'd like them to know it's moved and crawl as such.
I know that typically it's not good to offer crawlers one thing and others the other thing, but in this case it makes me ask a question.

That would be cloaking of one sort. I would suggest a plain redirect and send all traffic with a 301 redirect to the new domain. I think this would be in your bets interest, long term.
