It works well if you have a site where a user needs to fill out a request form or buy a product directly from you. You place the snippet of code on an order confirmation or an e-mail Thank You page to confirm that the user completed an action.

There isn't much to the setup. You just cut-and-paste the code from the AdWords site.
There's good, fast and cheap. Pick any two.

Thanks for the reply Tech. What about for affiliate sales with the total disapperance of my sites from the SE (Damn them) I want to try adwords but not sure if I can justify the cost or indeed if I can come out ahead after paying out on adwords on 6% sales commissions.

    Hi Kili

You can probably make AdWords work for you if you look for lots of low-cost keywords. The high cost keywords will likely be prohibitive.

G is a big problem with their duplicate content penalties.

I don't think we know the half of it re their penalties. I'm going over all my sites next week for html that won't validate.

I'm a stickler for using the W3C validator. Everything I do gets validated. If the code is not clean, it just makes it more difficult for spiders to parse out your pages.

Also, watch out for link exchange programs where you do not have control over who you link to. I've seen several sites that were penalized by G for linking to banned sites.

The PPC ROI code snippet setup is a little easier than setting up AdSense. The program has flaws (like everything), but it is a good relative measure of where your sales are coming from within AdWords.

Overture's is very similar and also easy to setup.

If you're doing PPC, I strongly recommend it.

If you sell 10 items over 100 keywords, don't draw any conclusions - especially for content match. Make sure you have a significant amount of data before making any conclusions.

If you're an affiliate, you'll need to work with your merchant to customize their "thank you for ordering" (for your unique affiliate code) page on the merchant's site - not all merchants have this ability.

Just buy a affiliate tracking script and use it to code your Adwords PPCSE links.
